LOS ANGELES, Calif. — The Stony Brook University baseball team fell at Cal State Northridge 14-4 Saturday afternoon at Matador Field.
Junior Matt Brown-Eiring and graduate Evan Giordano recorded two hits and senior Brandon Lashley turned in a strong 3.1 inning relief stint, but the Seawolves could not overcome a five-run first inning and two Matador home runs that ultimately gave the home team the victory.
Stony Brook (0-2, 0-0 CAA) sent out senior Jared Bellissimo on the hill to make his first career start for the Seawolves. The Rutgers transfer struck-out one batter, allowed one walk, and surrendered six earned-runs over his 2.1 innings.
After senior Derek Yalon reached on an error to begin the third inning, sophomore Chris Leone advanced Yalon to third base by sending a ball down the third base-line, giving Stony Brook two runners in scoring position with no outs. Junior Matt Miceli did his job by knocking in Yalon on a fielder's choice to second base, and Fox followed up with an RBI single to center field, pushing the score to 5-2.
The Matador offense (2-0, 0-0 Big West) scored two more runs in the following half inning, taking a five run lead. But, the Seawolves got a run back in the next inning after Brown-Eiring scorched a double through the left side, senior Brett Paulsen advancing Brown-Eiring to third base on a ground out to second base, and Yalon bringing home the junior on a sacrifice-fly.
The squad would score another run on a Paulsen double that drove in Brown-Eiring in the top of the sixth but the Matadors held the Seawolves scoreless for the remainder of the game and ultimately took home the 14-4 victory.
