Men’s Track and Field Earns Six Top-15 Finishes at Scarlet Knight Open

NEW YORK, N.Y. –  The Stony Brook men's track and field team competed in the Scarlet Knight Open, hosted by Rutgers University, at The Armory on Friday.
 
The Seawolves were led by a second-place finish from four student-athletes in the men's distance medley. Freshman Michael Hawkes, graduate Mahmoud Abdalla, graduate Conor Malanaphy, and sophomore Eben Bragg combined to finish the event in 10:26.50.
 
The Seawolves competed in five events throughout Friday's meet and were able to grab six top-15 finishes.
 
HIGHLIGHTS
  • Sophomore Steven Struk had Stony Brook's best individual finish of the day. He placed in third in the 5000 meter race, crossing the finish line in 14:35.10. Sophomore Nick Tardugno followed him, coming in 12th-place and finishing the race in 14:58.57 earning a new personal best.
  • In the 600 meter dash, Abdalla earned a ninth-place finish. He completed the race in 1:22.24.
  • Malanaphy earned a 12th-place finish in the 1000 meter. He finished the race in 2:30.82.
  • The Seawolves had two student-athletes finish in the top 25 in the mile event. Bragg crossed the finish line in 4:15.11, which was good enough for an 11th-place finish. Sophomore Thomas Burfeind finished in the top 25 as well, crossing the finish line in 4:20.58, setting a new personal record.

"We had a smaller group than usual compete today, but we got some encouraging performances from them. I was really pleased with Steve Struck's run in the 5000m, and Eben Bragg is showing signs of the same level of fitness he was at for last year's indoor season," said head coach Andy Ronan.
 
NEXT UP
Stony Brook will travel to Boston to compete in the David Hemery Valentine Invitational, hosted by Boston University, on Friday, Feb. 10. The meet will begin at 10 a.m. It will also compete in the Fastrack National Invite at Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex on Staten Island, beginning at 1 p.m.
