Baseball Loses Series Finale Against UNCW

Smink Tosses 6.2 Scoreless in Relief

STONY BROOK, N.Y. — The Stony Brook baseball program (8-13, 2-4 CAA) was not able to snag the rubber game on Sunday afternoon as the University of North Carolina Wilmington Seahawks (15-9, 7-2 CAA) scored nine runs across the first two innings for a 9-3 victory over the host Seawolves at Joe Nathan Field.

Stony Brook earned a run in the third inning after junior Evan Fox extended his on-base streak to 32 games dating back to last season after delivering a double down the left field line that drove sophomore Matt Miceli after he doubled to begin the inning.

In the sixth inning, the Seawolves would tally another two runs. Following a walk by junior Matt Brown-Eiring, junior Ryan Micheli doubled to center field, giving Stony Brook two runners in scoring-position with one out. Then, senior Brett Paulsen drove in Brown-Eiring on a sacrifice-fly and junior Derek Yalon brought home Micheli on a base-hit to make the score 9-3.

Freshman Eddie Smink entered the game in relief during the second inning. The right-hander got out of the jam by recording the final two outs of the inning, stranding runners at corners.

The native of Pennsylvania tossed a career high 6.2 innings out of the pen, allowing no earned runs to the second-ranked offense in the CAA, and struck out one batter. It was his third outing in a row that he surrendered one run or less and has gone five innings in two of his last three starts.

STATS AND NOTES
  • Yalon extended his hit-streak to five games after going 2-for-4 at the plate with a double and RBI. It was the fourth time this season that Yalon had a multi-hit game and has notched an RBI in seven of his last nine games.
  • Miceli also recorded a 2-for-4 afternoon and scored a run. It was the sixth time in his career that the shortstop recorded two or more hits in a game.
  • Paulsen extended his hit-streak to seven games and has a knock in nine of his last 10 games. He went 1-for-3 with an RBI.
  • Senior Brandon Lashley made his second start of the season and sixth appearance of the year. He went 1.1 innings and allowed five earned runs. He is now 2-1 this season.
  • Sophomore JT Raab made his team-high seventh appearance of the season by finishing the final inning for Stony Brook in relief. He struck out two batters in his one inning of work.
