HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. — In the game that saw four different lead changes in the first three innings, the Stony Brook baseball team (10-14, 3-5 CAA) held a 4-3 deficit heading into the bottom half of the fifth, but Hofstra (9-16, 4-7 CAA) scored twice in the fifth and followed with another four runs in the sixth inning to ultimately take a 10-8 victory, setting up a Sunday rubber game.
The Stony Brook offense had eight players in their lineup that recorded a base knock this afternoon, as five different student-athletes registered multiple hits. After going 3-for-5 at the plate with a career-high four RBI in the victory yesterday, senior Shane Paradine followed up with a 3-for-4 performance with two RBI and a run scored this afternoon.
Graduate Evan Giordano got the Seawolves on the scoreboard first by knocking in junior Evan Fox. Fox extended his on-base streak to 35 games dating back to last season by leading the game off with a hit-by-pitch. The speedster went 2-for-3 at the plate with a double, triple, and two stolen-bases.
The Seawolves sent on graduate Jared Bellissimo to make his team-high sixth start of the season. The left-hander went 3.2 innings, allowed four earned runs and struck out one batter.
The Pride would score two in the bottom of the first but the Seawolves responded with two runs of their own in the third inning. Paradine registered his second hit of the day by doubling to left field and a few batters later, senior Brett Paulsen brought home Giordano on a sacrifice-fly. Stony Brook would take a 3-2 lead heading to the bottom of the third. But, Hofstra would score another two runs in their half of the third to take the 4-3 lead.
After the Pride scored six runs over the fifth and sixth inning, the Seawolves answered with five runs of their own but it wasn't enough as the Pride held the 10-8 victory. In the sixth, Fox drove in Miceli with a triple. Then in the seventh inning, Paulsen brought home Paradine after he launched his first home run of the season. Paradine knocked a sacrifice-fly in and Fox scored on a balk to give the Seawolves two runs in the eighth inning.
First year student Sadier Vicioso finished the final 2.1 innings out of the pen. The left-hander allowed one earned run, struck out a batter, and allowed one hit. It was the fourth time in his five starts this season that Vicioso completed 2.0 innings.
