Walkoff Single Sends Baseball to Extra Inning Loss at Army

WEST POINT, N.Y. — An RBI single in the bottom of the 10th inning sealed the deal on Tuesday afternoon as the Stony Brook baseball team fell 7-6 to Army University.

The Seawolves (12-18, 4-8 CAA) wasted no time making their presence felt in West Point as they notched four runs on the Black Knights (20-12, 9-2 Patriot League) in the first inning to take the early advantage.

Junior Evan Fox started the rally by leading off the game with a walk and then tallied his 22nd stolen-base of the season which leads the CAA and is good for 12th in the nation. After a foul-out to short, senior Shane Paradine launched his fourth homer of the season and 12th of his career to give the squad a 2-0 advantage.

The next batter, junior Matt Brown-Eiring sent a no-doubter over the left field fence for his fourth homerun of the season and 14th of his career. A few batters later, sophomore Matt Miceli drove in senior Derek Yalon on a knock, giving Stony Brook the 4-0 lead.

After senior Brandon Lashley finished his first two innings on the bump by allowing one unearned run, senior Devin Sharkey retired all three batters he saw in the third inning. But, after a pitching change by Stony Brook in the next inning, the Black Knights took advantage and tied the game at 4-4.

The teams would go back and forth by trading one run each in the fifth and eighth inning.

In the fifth inning, graduate Evan Giordano led the inning off by sending his team-high seventh home run of the season to give Stony Brook a 5-4 lead. This was the 29th career blast for Giordano, which moves him into sixth all-time in program history.

After Army tallied a run in the fifth, sophomore Cade Thompson and senior Eric Foster each held the Black Knights in check by tossing a scoreless sixth and seventh inning.

Stony Brook would retake the lead in the next half inning. Brown-Eiring sizzled a one-out double to left center and a few batters later, sophomore Anthony Gentile pitched-hit for Miceli. The left-hander came up clutch for the squad as he delivered an RBI knock to give the 6-5 lead to the Seawolves.

Graduate Nick DeGennaro made his first appearance since March 19 by finishing the final 2.1 innings. The right-hander struck out five, surrendered two walks, and one run (earned) as Army ultimately took home the victory 7-6.
