Abel and 4x400 Relay Team Set New Program Records at Northeast Challenge

STORRS. Conn. – The Stony Brook men's track and field team made program history at the Northeast Challenge on April 14-15.
 
Senior Patrick Abel added another program record to his breakout season and the 4x400 meter relay squad continued the momentum. Abel broke a 30-year-old record with his final time of 10.66 in the 100 meter dash. Abel surpassed Roger Gill's record of 10.70 which he has held since 1993.
 
The 4x400 relay team comprised of Abel, Nicolas Lavazoli, Aleks Zdravkovic and Justin Vazquez also set a new program record with their final combined time of 3:12.50 which placed them tied for second. The squad beat the previous record of 3:12.77, which was set last year by Richmond Boateng, Zdravkovic, Abel, and Lavazoli.
 
Conor Malanaphy, Colin Ross and Aleks Zdravkovic all secured top 10 finishes for the Seawolves. Malanaphy earned an eighth-place overall finish in the 1500 meter on Friday with a final time of 3:53.97 and Ross finished directly behind him in ninth with a final time of 3:54.66. Zdravkovic crossed the line in 48.09 to earn a 10th place finish and new personal best in the 400 meter.
 
HIGHLIGHTS
  • Steven Struk finished just outside the top 10 on Friday with an 11th palce finish in the 1500 meter with his final time of 3:57.38.
  • Miles Ryan clocked in a 14.86 which was good for a 13th place finish in the 110 hurdles. Joshua Titus rounded out the top 15 with a final time of 14.90.
  • Lavazoli earned a 16th place finish in the 200 meter dash with a final time of 21.85. Vazquez finish within the top 20 with a final time of 21.98.
NEXT UP
The squad returns to the track next weekend when it travels to Charlottesville, Va. and New Haven, Conn. to compete in the Virginia Challenge and the Mark Young Invitational.
