12 Seawolves Earn Top-Five Finishes at Mark Young Invitational; Men's Track & Field Takes Home Third

NEW HAVEN, Conn.  The Stony Brook men's track and field team battled at the Mark Young Invitational at Yale University on Saturday, April 22, as the squad earned 96 points to give themselves a third-place finish out of five teams. Southern Connecticut State University collected the victory at the Invitational by earning 175 points. 

The Seawolves had multiple first-place finishes this afternoon, as the team notched victories in the 400 meter hurdles and the 200 meter and 800 meter races. 

In the 200 meter heat, junior Patrick Abel continued his dominant spring as he earned the victory by .1 seconds, after crossing the line at 21.78 to give the Seawolves 10 points.

Gradaute Aiden Smyth took home the win in the 800 meter by finishing with a final time of 1:54.42 to give Stony Brook another 10 points.

To finish out the first-place performances for the Seawolves, graduate Miles Ryan captured the victory in the 400 meter hurdles. Ryan crossed the line at 56.44, which nearly topped his personal best in the 400 at 55.57. 

HIGHLIGHTS
  • The Seawolves earned their most points in the 1500 meter by collecting 18. Pacing the squad was senior Conor Malanaphy taking second-place at 3:54.19, fellow senior Colin Ross in third-place at 3:54.51, and sophomore Eben Bragg coming in right behind in fourth-place at 3:55.19.
  • In the 110 meter hurdles, Stony Brook notched 11 points after Ryan took home third-place at 14.84 and junior Seth Hilario in fourth-overall at 14.99. 
  • Stony Brook had two top-five finishes in the 400 meter race as junior Aleks Zdravkovic crossed the finish line at 49.06 and sophomore Justin Vazquez at 50.19 for third and fourth-place, respectively. 
  • Junior Gavin Da Vanzo collected eight points for the Seawolves in the high jump by scoring a 1.90.
  • First-year student John Fontanez earned fifth-place in the 5000 meter by crossing the finish line at 15:15.29. 

NEXT UP
Stony Brook is back on the track next weekend (April 27 – April 29) when it travels down to Philadelphia, Pa. to compete in the Penn Relays, the regular season finale for the Seawolves before they travel to the CAA Championships on May 5.
