ELON, N.C. — The Stony Brook baseball (15-22, 7-11 CAA) team earned their first-ever CAA series victory after taking the rubber game against Elon University (24-15, 13-7 CAA) this afternoon, 8-5.
Stony Brook jumped all over the Phoenix early in the game by tallying a run in the first inning and two runs in the second inning to take a 3-0 lead.
Graduate
Evan Giordano continued his hot weekend at the plate by launching his ninth home run of the season and 31st of his career to give Stony Brook the 1-0 advantage. The third baseman is one homer away from tying Robert Dryer for the fifth-most bombs in program history.
The Seawolve sent out first-year student
Eddie Smink to make his fourth CAA start of the season. The right-hander had one of his best performances of the season by allowing one run (earned), four hits, and struck out six batters over 5.0 innings.
After Smink tossed two strike outs in the first inning and sat down the Phoenix bats with no damage, the Seawolves tacked on another two runs in the next half.
First-year student
Matthew Wright began the two-out rally with a knock to right field and after he stole second base, the first-year student reached the plate by junior
Evan Fox sending him home on a double to left field. Elon would intentionally walk Giordano to get to senior
Shane Paradine and the clean-up hitter made the most of the opportunity by driving Fox home on a single.
But, Elon would respond with a run of their own in the third inning and three in the sixth to take a 4-3 lead.
In the seventh inning, the Seawolves began to rally as they started the inning with four consecutive hits. Wright and Fox tallied back-to-back knocks, giving two runners in scoring position for Giordano. The graduate tallied his third hit of the afternoon, driving in both Wright and Fox to give Stony Brook the 5-4 advantage.
After a pitching change for Elon, Paradine and senior
Derek Yalon tallied RBI knocks, allowing Stony Brook to take a 7-4 lead heading into the stretch.
Junior
Quinlan Montgomery entered the game in the seventh inning for the Seawolves after graduate
Nick DeGennaro allowed two earned runs in the sixth. Montgomery surrendered a walk and hit-by-pitch to lead off the frame, but the right-handler kept his composure by getting a double-play and struck out the final batter of the inning to keep their three run lead.
Following an RBI knock by junior
Matt Brown-Eiring in the eighth, the Phoenix responded with a run of their own in the next inning, making the score 8-5 with one inning to play.
Montgomery would shut the door on the game by stranding a runner on second base to secure the victory.
