ELON, N.C. — The Stony Brook baseball team (14-22, 6-11 CAA) fell under the lights tonight to Elon University (24-14, 13-6 CAA) by a final of 18-5, setting up a Sunday rubber game against the conference rival.
Graduate
Evan Giordano led the way for the Seawolves as he was a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate, which was the second time this season that the native of New Jersey registered at least four hits (five against LIU on March 7) and the sixth time of his career.
In the 165th game of his career, the graduate tallied his 200th career hit after knocking a single up the middle in his first at-bat of the game in the opening inning. He is now just 18 hits away from passing Brian Witkowski for the 10th most hits in program history with 220 knocks.
The Seawolves sent out senior
Josh O'Neill to make his fourth start of the season. The right-hander kept the Phoenix offense at ease over 5.1 innings, as he allowed four runs (three earned), five hits, and struck out six batters.
After Elon captured three runs throughout the first five innings, the Seawolves bats came alive by scoring two runs in the sixth inning. Giordano registered a one-out double down the left field line and senior
Shane Paradine sent the third baseman home by hitting a single through the left side. A few batters later, senior
Derek Yalon drove in Paradine on a double down the right field line, making the score 3-2 in the sixth inning.
But in the bottom half of the sixth inning, the Elon offense answered with seven runs on three hits to take the 10-2 advantage.
Stony Brook would respond in the next half inning as junior
Evan Fox drove in first-year student
Matthew Wright on his fifth home run of the season and 11th of his career. Paradine also registered an RBi in the inning after grounding out to third base to cut the lead to 10-5.
Elon would ultimately score eight runs over the seventh and eighth inning to take the 18-5 victory.
