RICHMOND, Va. – Stony Brook baseball graduate student
Evan Giordano has been named the CAA Player of the Week after his efforts against Manhattan and Elon this past week, the conference announced on Monday afternoon.
This is the second time of the season that Giordano has won the award, as he was the first player to earn a CAA Weekly honor in Stony Brook's inaugural season in the conference on March 13.
Giordano, a native of New Jersey, hit .647 (11-for-17) with five doubles, two homers, eight runs scored and five RBI's in Stony Brook's four games last week.
To begin the week, the third baseman went 1-for-4 against Manhattan with his eighth home run of the season. The blast by Giordano was the 30th of his career, becoming one of just six players in program history and one of three players in their Division I program history to reach 30 career home runs.
On Friday, Giordano started the series against Elon by going 3-for-5 with three runs scored and an RBI to lead the Seawolves to a 9-4 opening-night victory.
He returned to the diamond on Saturday night in historic fashion. In his first at-bat, Giordano tallied his 200th career hit by knocking a single up the middle. He ended his afternoon by going 4-for-4 at the plate, which marked the second time this season that the graduate registered at least four hits and the sixth time of his career.
In the series-clinching victory, Giordano was the hero for the Seawolves. He began the game by launching his ninth home run of the year and 31st of his career to give Stony Brook the 1-0 advantage. The third baseman is one homer away from tying Robert Dryer for the fifth-most bombs in program history. After trailing 4-3 in the top of the seventh, the graduate tallied his third knock of the afternoon that drove in two runs to give Stony Brook the 5-4 lead and ultimately the 8-5 victory.
This season, Giordano ranks third in the conference in hits (60) and batting average (.387). Also, he leads CAA in doubles (17), second in slugging percentage (.697), and fourth in RBI (41).
The Seawolves host Iona University tomorrow at Joe Nathan Field. Action is set to begin at 3:00 p.m.
