STONY BROOK, N.Y. – After trailing by five runs heading into the ninth inning, the Seawolves sent nine student-athletes to the plate and tallied four runs in the inning, but ultimately fell short in an 8-7 loss against the College of William & Mary.
Stony Brook (11-16, 3-7) sent out graduate Ben Fero to make his seventh start of the season. The right-hander allowed four runs (earned), struck out six batters, and surrendered six hits over his 6.0 innings on the bump. It was the fourth time in his last five starts in which the right-hander completed at least 6.0 innings.
The Tribe (20-11, 6-4 CAA) led 1-0 after the first, but the Seawolves would respond with two runs of their own in the second and third inning.
Junior outfielder Derek Yalon launched his first home run of the season to tie the game in the second. In the third, junior Evan Fox led the inning off with a base knock and then scored on a throwing error from second base to give the Seawolves their first lead of the game.
Fero would settle in on the bump by retiring nine straight between the third and fifth inning. The Tribe took a 4-2 lead in the top half of the sixth after a bases-clearing pitch-hit double.
The Seawolves answered again in the bottom half of the sixth with junior Matt Brown-Eiring sending his third home run of the season over the left field fence to cut the deficit to one run.
William and Mary would score four runs over the seventh and eighth inning to take a 8-3 lead.
Stony Brook mounted a rally in the ninth inning. Sophomore Matt Miceli led off with a walk, then Fox singled to center, and junior Ryan Micheli loaded the bases by drawing a walk. William & Mary would get an out at home on a fielder's-choice but the next batter, senior Shane Paradine singled in a run to make it 8-4. Brown-Eiring would drive in another run by reaching on a hit-by-pitch following the Paradine single.
Yalon put the pressure on Tribe with a two-run double to cut the deficit to one run, setting up Stony Brook with the tying run at third and winning run at second. Unfortunately, William & Mary retired the next two batters to escape with the win.
