TOWSON, Md. – The Stony Brook baseball team (23-28, 14-15 CAA) fell this afternoon to Towson University (18-37, 6-23 CAA), 15-5, setting up a Saturday rubber game in Maryland.
The Seawolves wasted no time jumping on the scoreboard first by tallying two runs in the opening inning. Graduate
Evan Giordano cemented his name into the Stony Brook record book after launching the 33rd home run of his career to give the squad an early 2-0 advantage. He surpassed Robert Dyer for fifth all-time in program history and is now second behind Alex Trezza (55) for the program's all-time Division I record.
Stony Brook sent out senior
Josh O'Neill to make his 15th appearance of the season and eighth start of the year. After allowing a run in the first frame, the right-hander settled in and did not allow a run over the next three innings.
With a 2-1 lead heading into the third inning, senior
Shane Paradine led the frame off with a double to left field. Following a punch out by Stony Brook, senior
Derek Yalon brought Paradine home with his 10th double of the season to give the Seawolves the 3-1 advantage.
O'Neill would go on to retire Towson in the fourth without allowing a run, but the Tigers got to the senior in the fifth inning by registering three runs to take a 4-3 lead.
After the right-hander stranded a runner at second base to end the bottom half of the sixth, the Seawolves answered with a run of their own in the seventh to tie the game. With two outs, Paradine launched his fifth home run of the season to left field that allowed the Seawolves to make the game 4-4.
However, Towson would go on to score 11 runs in the bottom half of the eighth to take the 11 run lead and ultimately the 15-5 victory.
