STONY BROOK, N.Y. — The Stony Brook baseball team (19-23, 10-11 CAA) fell in its non-conference matchup on Tuesday afternoon, dropping a 5-4 decision to Fairfield University (25-14, 9-3 MAAC) at Joe Nathan Field.
Stony Brook earned all four of its runs in the eighth inning of play, as the Seawolves made the most of two errors by the Stags to cut the deficit to 5-2.
Then, senior Shane Paradine launched an RBI double and junior Matt Brown-Eiring drove in graduate Evan Giordano on a sac-fly to make it 5-4.
But, Fairfield retired the Stony Brook bats in order in the ninth inning to seal the one run victory.
The Seawolves sent out sophomore JT Raab to make his 16th appearance of the season and second start of the year. The right-hander surrendered three runs (earned) and struck out three batters over 2.2 innings.
After Raab came out during the third inning, senior Brandon Lashley entered the game and kept the bats for Fairfield quiet over the next 2.1 innings by not allowing a hit or run.
Graduate Jared Bellissimo would come into the game for Lashey in the sixth and allowed one run (earned) over his two innings on the bump. In the bottom of the seventh, Paradine led the inning off with a walk and Brown-Eiring followed with a double, but the Seawolves were unable to get on the board.
Following a scoreless eighth and ninth inning out of the pen by junior Quinlan Montgomery, the Seawolves made their noise by tallying four runs in their last turn at the plate, but the Stags held on to their lead to secure the 5-4 victory.
