Football Adds Seven Signees to 2023 Roster

STONY BROOK, N.Y. – Stony Brook football head coach Chuck Priore has announced the signing of nine student-athletes. All nine student-athletes are transferring in from another institution and are set to join the Seawolves' roster for the 2023 season.
 
Stony Brook has signed transfers Hunter Barlow (OL | Kansas), Derell Bedingfield (LB | Toledo), Chayce Chalmers (DB | Virginia), Brandon Higgs (DB | ECU), Jalen Hoyle (DB | Virginia Tech), Cam Johnson (DB | Virginia Tech), D'Angelo McKinnie (TE | ECU), Andy Nwaoko (DE | Boise State), and Anthony Pecorella (P | Maryland).
 
"I am excited for the addition of our new transfers. I know we are adding quality student-athletes to our team. They all will blend into our current culture and help us become a better football program," said Stony Brook head coach Chuck Priore as he discussed the Seawolves' seven new additions to the 2023 roster.
 
Hunter Barlow | Offensive Lineman | Hutchinson, Kan.  
Barlow joins the Seawolves as a transfer from Kansas. Before Kansas, he spent two seasons at Hutchinson Community College. Over two seasons at Hutchinson, Barlow played in 11 games. In 2022, he appeared in three games and helped the Blue Dragons to a 5-1 record and a berth to the NJCAA National Championship. As a freshman in 2021, he played in nine games and Hutchinson finished the season 9-2 and defeated Hinds Community College in the 2021 Salt City Bowl. Barlow played football at Haven High School from 2017-21 and earned All-State honors as a senior in 2021.

Derell Bedingfield Jr. | Linebacker | Garfield Heights, Ohio
The linebacker spent the first year of his collegiate career at Toledo in 2022. As a freshman, he played in one game and made one tackle. Bedingfield Jr. made his collegiate debut on September 10, against UMass.
 
Before his collegiate career began, Bedingfield Jr. starred at Benedictine High School in Cleveland, Ohio. He was a three-star prospect according to 24/7 Sports and was tabbed to the All-Ohio First Team in his senior season. As a senior, he tallied 94 tackles, eight sacks and four TFL. He was named to the Tony Fisher Award watch list, which goes to The News-Herald Player of the Year in football.
 
After his junior season, he was selected to the All-Ohio Third Team and All-District First Team after recording 77 tackles and six sacks that season. He is the son of Lakia Griggs and has four younger siblings, Destiny, SirVick, Kingston and ARayaha.
 
Chayce Chalmers | Defensive Back | Gainesville, S.C.   
Chalmers comes to Stony Brook after getting his collegiate career started at Virginia. While at Virginia, Chalmers appeared in 30 games and made 10 tackles (seven solo, three assists). In 2022, he earned the Wells Fargo Advisors Humanitarian Award, was one of 15 ACC student-athlete recipients of the Go Teach Dr Pepper Tuition Giveaway and was nominated for the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team. In 2021, he was one of six Virginia student-athletes to receive the ACC Top VI Award. In addition, Chalmers was presented with the UVA Distinguished Student-Athlete Scholarship Award and was a member of the 2021-22 ACC Academic Honor Roll.
 
Before his collegiate career began, he played safety and wide receiver at Stonewall Jackson High School. While in high school, Chalmers was named First Team All-Region, First Team All-Cedar Run District, First Team All-District, and Second Team All-Conference. As a senior in 2018, he posted 60 tackles and four interceptions, returning one for a touchdown. As a junior in 2017, he recorded 77 tackles, one interception, one sack, and one blocked punt. Chalmers was a three-star recruit by ESPN.com, Rivals.com, and 247sports.com.
 
Brandon Higgs | Defensive Back | Simpsonville, S.C.   
Higgs is a transfer from ECU and played seven games for the Pirates in 2022. Prior to the 2022 season, Higgs spent two seasons at NE Oklahoma A&M and played in 13 games. As a member of the Norseman, he made 20 tackles (13 solo, seven assists) and picked off one pass. In 2021, he played in eight games for NE Oklahoma A&M and recorded at least one tackle in five games. Higgs registered a season-best seven tackles (all solo) against Tyler Junior College and picked off his one career pass against Navarro College. Following the 2021 season, he was named a SWJCFC Honorable Mention. Before his collegiate career began, he spent four years at Hillcrest High School where he earned All-Conference honors.
 
Jalen Hoyle | Defensive Back | Englewood, N.J.    
Hoyle joins Stony Brook as a transfer from Virginia Tech. In 2022, he played in 11 games and recorded six tackles and 1.0 TFL. Before his collegiate career began, he attended Dwight Morrow High School where he played quarterback and defensive back. As a senior in 2020, he helped the Raiders compile a 5-1 record and earned All-North Jersey First Team honors. During his final season in high school, he accumulated 46 total tackles, including 6.0 sacks to go along with one interception. He claimed All-Conference First Team honors his final three seasons and an All-County Second Team pick as a junior and senior.

Cam Johnson | Defensive Back | Washington, D.C. 
Johnson joins Stony Brook after spending the 2022 season at Virginia Tech, where he appeared in two games and recorded three tackles. He made his collegiate debut on October 1, 2022, at North Carolina. Before his college career began, he played cornerback at St. Frances Academy in Baltimore, Md. St. Frances went 8-1 during the fall 2021 season. Johnson was rated as a four-star prospect by 247Sports Composite and ranked as the No. 8 high school player in Maryland by 247Sports Composite. In addition to Virginia Tech, he had four other Power Five offers including Michigan, Penn State, Ole Miss, and Texas A&M coming out of high school. He began his high school career at DeMatha.

D'Angelo McKinnie | Tight End | Kenansville, N.C.  
McKinnie comes to Stony Brook from ECU where he played in 40 games over five seasons. Prior to the 2022 campaign, he moved back to the offensive side of the ball (tight end) after spending the 2020 and 2021 seasons on the defensive line. Before his collegiate career began, he was a team captain and key member on Southwest Onslow's defensive unit which rolled to a 2017 Coastal 1A/2A Conference championship with a perfect 7-0 league record. McKinnie also helped the Stallions to the Eastern 2A finals before finishing with an overall mark of 11-4 as a senior. While playing defensive line as a senior in high school, he was credited with 52 tackles (18 solo), 14 TFLs, 5.5 sacks, four quarterback hurries and one fumble recovery to earn All-Conference First Team honors. He was also tabbed an All-Conference Honorable Mention as a junior. He participated in the 2017 Shrine Bowl Combine in Kinston, N.C. In addition, McKinnie earned membership into the National Honor Society and Beta Club during his high school career.
 
Andy Nwaoko | Defensive End | Saint George, Va.
Nwaoko spent the first three years of his collegiate career at Boise State. In 2022, he made his collegiate debut on October 29 against Colorado State and made his first career tackle on November 12 at Nevada. In the Fall of 2020, he was tabbed the Academic All-Mountain West Team. Before his collegiate career began, he was a two-sport athlete at Blue Ridge School where he played both football and basketball. On the gridiron, he was named the Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association Division II Defensive Player of the Year as a senior, in addition to garnering First Team defensive honors.
 
Anthony Pecorella | Punter | Malverne, N.Y.   
Pecorella, a Long Island native, returns home to complete his collegiate career. The punter joins the Seawolves after a successful four-year career at Maryland where he played in 32 games. Over the course of his career, he attempted 80 punts for 3,372 yards and 42.1 yards per punt. He placed 31 punts inside the 20 and recorded 16 punts of 50 or more yards. In 2022, he was selected to the Wuerffel Trophy Watch List, was an Academic All-Big Ten selection, and James H. Kehoe Terp Award recipient. In 2021, he earned the Big Ten Sportsmanship Award and was a two-time Big Ten Distinguished Scholar (2020-21, 2021-22). He served as the Student Affairs Liaison on the SAAC Executive Board in 2021-22. Before Maryland, he averaged 43.8 yards per punt and had a career long punt of 72 yards over two years at Chaminade High School. He totaled 37 touchbacks on the kickoff unit, accumulating over 4,000 yards. He was a two-time All-Long Island selection and was named to the All-State Team twice.
