QUEENS, N.Y. – Despite a dominant first quarter performance from the Seawolves, the Stony Brook women's basketball team was defeated by St. John's 58-34 on Sunday afternoon in Carnesecca Arena. The loss drops the Seawolves' record to 3-2 on the young season.
Zaida Gonzalez led the squad with nine points and six rebounds, while
Lauren Filien added six points off of the bench.
Janay Brantley chipped in with five points and two steals as
Breauna Ware grabbed six boards and dished out five assists.
Stony Brook's defense held St. John's to only 9.5 percent shooting from beyond the arc.
HOW IT HAPPENED
After playing to a 2-2 tie early in the game, Stony Brook went on a 7-0 run with 6:23 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from Gonzalez, to take a 9-2 lead. The Seawolves then added one point to that lead by the end of the period and entered the quarter break with a 17-9 advantage going 7-for-17 on 41.2 percent shooting.
The Seawolves could not maintain their lead in the second quarter as the Red Storm were able to build momentum off of a 10-0 run. Gonzalez, Brantley, Filien, and
Shamarla King each scored a bucket to account for Stony Brook's eight points in the second quarter. The Seawolves entered halftime trailing 29-25.
Stony Brook's deficit continued to grow after halftime, and the Seawolves faced a 47-31 disadvantage heading to the fourth quarter. The Red Storm played some of their best basketball shooting 64.3 percent from the field going 9-for-14 as Stony Brook tried to keep themselves in the game.
The Seawolves could not pull any closer in the fourth, only scoring three points off a layup and free throw from Gonzalez. Stony Brook would lose by a final of 58-34.

Stony Brook will return to the court on Wednesday, Nov. 27 at 12 p.m. as the Seawolves take on Harvard, the two programs first meeting since the 2017-18 season.
