STONY BROOK, NY --The Stony Brook women's basketball team earned their 20th victory of the season and eighth consecutive win over the Pride after defeating Hofstra, 81-48, at Island Federal Arena.
The Seawolves (20-3, 10-2) had three players score in double figures, led by Gigi Gonzalez, who had 24 points and six assists. Sherese Pittman tacked on 15 points and seven rebounds and Victoria Keenan chipped in as well with 11 points and two steals from the bench.
The Stony Brook offense was very productive from three point land, knocking down nine threes on 23 attempts. Keenan was the most prolific shooter for the Seawolves, draining three treys in the contest. Also, the Stony Brook defense held Hofstra shooters to only 29.4 percent from the field, including 14.3 percent from three-point range.
HOW IT HAPPENED
After falling behind 16-14, Stony Brook went on a 7-0 run with 3:23 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from Keenan, to take a 21-16 lead. The Seawolves then surrendered that lead and entered the second quarter down 22-21. Keenan led the way with eight points in the quarter, including two of her three three-pointers in the game.
Hofstra kept adding to that lead, building a 28-25 advantage before Stony Brook went on a 12-0 run, highlighted by a bucket from Gonzalez, who scored 10 points in the stretch to take a 37-28 lead. The Seawolves would get another layup by Pittman and free-throw by Gonalzez to take the 40-30 advantage into the break. Stony Brook forced eight Hofstra turnovers in the period and turned them into five points.
The squad continued to preserve its halftime lead before going on a 13-0 run, punctuated by a three from Shamarla King, to expand its lead further to 53-34 with 2:03 to go in the third. Before the third period was over, the Seawolves added three points to that lead and entered the fourth quarter with a 58-36 edge. Stony Brook took advantage of seven Hofstra turnovers in the quarter, scoring nine points off of takeaways.
Stony Brook kept widening that lead, expanding it to 75-48 before going on a 6-0 run to grow the lead to 81-48 with 47 seconds to go in the contest following the four-point-play by Khalis Whiting, a score which would hold for the rest of the game. Stony Brook took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring 12 of its 23 points in the paint.
