STONY BROOK, N.Y. – Stony Brook women's lacrosse scored 11 of the first 13 goals and got career offensive performances from
Alex Finn and
Ellie Masera to open the 2024 season with an 18-11 victory at LaValle Stadium on Sunday.
Stony Brook (1-0) got a career-high eight goals and 10 points from Masera along with a career-high seven assists and nine points from Finn. Masera took 16 of Stony Brook's 36 shots in the game.
Kailyn Hart also added five goals on eight shots (.625), with
Charlotte Verhulst getting in the scoring column twice and
Morgan Mitchell once.
Defensively, the Seawolves had six caused turnovers and 10 ground balls as a team.
Clare Levy and
Emily Manning each caused two turnovers. Manning led the way with three ground balls and Finn, Levy and Masera each picked up two. In her first start as a Seawolf,
Emily Manning made eight saves with a .421 save percentage.
In the possession game, Stony Brook got six draw controls each from Masera and
Clare Levy, with Verhulst adding three.
For Dartmouth, Kate Elders scored four times, while Catherine Erb added three tallies and Lucy Murray scored twice. Goalkeeper Gisele Todd made nine saves in net on a .360 save percentage.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Seawolves got out in front and scored the first three goals in 4:23 to take a 3-0 lead.
- Stony Brook extended its lead to 6-2 at the end of the first, with Masera scoring from the free position with one second to play.
- The Seawolves extended the lead to 10-2 with 2:31 left in the first half, with Masera and Hart accounting for each of the first four goals in the quarter. The Seawolves led 11-3 at the end of the first half.
- Manning made three saves in the second quarter.
- Finn scored twice with Masera and Hart tallying goals in the third, as Stony Brook held its eight-goal margin.
- Up 15-9 in the fourth, Stony Brook went on a 3-0 run in 1:11 with a goal from Verhulst and two from Masera to extend the lead to 18-9.
- Manning added three more saves in the fourth.
NOTES, TRENDS AND RECORDS
- Masera's eight goals were tied for third in program history and one shy of the program record. The last Stony Brook player that scored eight goals was Taryn Ohlmiller on May 1, 2021 against UMBC.
- Finn's seven assists were tied for fifth in single a game in Stony Brook history and was last reached by Taryn Ohlmiller, who had eight on May 16, 2021.
- Hart scored five goals for the seventh time in her career.
- The Seawolves tailled 18 goals in a season opener for the first time since 2016, when they won 18-4 against Bryant.
- Stony Brook shot .500 as a team and assisted on 10 of its 18 goals on the afternoon.
- The Seawolves out-shot Dartmouth 36-22 on Sunday.

The Seawolves are back home on Tuesday, Feb. 20 to take on Bryant, with first draw scheduled for 3 p.m. The Bulldogs are 2-1 on the season with wins over Holy Cross and Sacred Heart. Stony Brook is 3-0 against Bryant all-time and Tuesday will be the two teams' first meeting since 2019.
