STONY BROOK, N.Y. – Stony Brook women's lacrosse pulled away from Bryant early and earned a comfortable victory in a 17-3 final over the Bulldogs at LaValle Stadium on Tuesday.
The Seawolves improved to 2-0 while Bryant fell to 0-2.
Stony Brook (1-0) got five goals and six points from senior
Ellie Masera, along with a game-high seven draw controls. Graduate student
Alex Finn added three goals and two assists for five points. Sophomore
Courtney Maclay and graduate student
Jolie Creo each added two goals and Maclay added an assist for a three-point afternoon.
On defense, Stony Brook caused 11 turnovers as a team with two each from Maclay, senior
Clare Levy, junior
Avery Hines and freshman
Isabella Caporuscio. Stony Brook won the draw control battle as well, 18-14 with six players in total picking up two and six more scooping one each.
In the circle, Stony Brook added to Masera's seven draw controls with five from graduate student
Charlotte Verhulst and three from Levy, helping the Seawolves to a 16-7 draw control advantage.
Sam Centofante made nine saves for Bryant while Emily DeGeorge, Kenna Kaut and Amilia Percy each struck for a goal.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Stony Brook scored the first five goals of the game in a span of 6:55. Finn capped the run with a spectacular behind-the-back finish.
- After a Bryant tally, Finn and Masera struck to put Stony Brook up 7-1 at the end of the first.
- Stony Brook grabbed a 10-1 lead just 4:32 into the second quarter, as the Seawolves scored in transition off turnovers. The Seawolves carried a 10-2 advantage into halftime.
- Up 11-3 in the third, the Seawolves scored twice to establish a 10-goal lead, with Maclay providing the final tally from the free position.
- The Seawolves scored all four goals in the fourth, with Creo scoring twice along with one each from Kailyn Hart and Masera.
NOTES, TRENDS AND RECORDS
- Stony Brook held an impressive 34-9 shot total for the game, shooting at a .500 for the second straight game.
- The nine shots allowed was the fewest since March 1, 2023, when SBU allowed just eight to San Diego State.
- Nine different Seawolves scored on the afternoon. Two freshmen in Caporuscio and Haydin Eisfeld each scored their first career goals on Tuesday.
- Stony Brook won its 61st straight game against America East opponents, a streak that dates back to 2014.
- The Seawolves also extended their nation-best home winning streak to 36 games.
- Stony Brook's 35 goals in its first two games marks the most for the Seawolves in the first two games of a season since 2020, when SBU totaled 37.
