QUEENS, N.Y. --The Stony Brook Seawolves brought an 8-7 lead into the ninth inning, but could not hold on and fell 9-8 to the St. John's (NY) Red Storm Wednesday.
Freshman Eric Paulsen led the way offensively for the Seawolves, going 2-for-5 in the ballgame with a home run and an RBI. Junior Nicm Solorzano put together a standout performance as well, going 2-for-3 with a double and three RBI. Senior M. Brown-Eiring also helped out, going 3-for-5 for Stony Brook with a triple. Senior Ty Saunders (0-3) came out of the bullpen for Stony Brook (7-8) and took the loss.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Seawolves got on the board immediately, starting their scoring with one run in the top of the first inning. Paulsen put Stony Brook on the board with a two-out solo home run off sophomore Andrew Castelluccio.
Stony Brook then lost the lead they built in the first, but got back on the board in the second trailing 2-1. Stony Brook put together a three-run frame, culminating in a run-scoring single from junior Matt Miceli, which brought the Seawolves lead to 4-2.
Stony Brook held St. John's (NY) without a run before expanding their lead to 5-2 the following inning after Pilla walked and Matt Brown-Eiring scored on the pass ball.
The Red Storm fought back, closing the gap to 5-3 until Stony Brook added some insurance in the fifth. The three-run frame for the Seawolves was punctuated by a two-RBI double from Solorzano, bringing the score to 8-3 in favor of Stony Brook. The Seawolves were unable to hold the lead, as St. John's (NY) scored six times over the remaining four innings to grab the 9-8 win.
