STONY BROOK, N.Y. – No. 14 Stony Brook women's lacrosse scored 15 of the game's final 17 goals to pick up its seventh win of the season, defeating Elon 18-6 at LaValle Stadium Friday evening.
The Seawolves improved to 7-2 (2-0 CAA) on the season while the Phoenix fell to 5-5 (1-1 CAA).
Stony Brook was led in the goal column by graduate student
Kailyn Hart and senior
Ellie Masera with four goals apiece. Graduate student
Alex Finn and senior
Jaden Hampel each added three goals, with Finn distributing five assists for a game-high eight points. Graduate student

Caitlin Dellecave, sophomore
Alexandra Fusco and freshman
Cassidy Millen each scored once.
On defense, junior
Avery Hines caused a career-high five turnovers and picked up three ground balls. Hampel added two caused turnovers and picked up a ground ball. Seven other players caused one turnover while graduate students
Erin MacQuarrie and
Jolie Creo each scooped two ground balls. Senior
Aaliyah Jones saved two of the three shots she saw on goal on the evening.
For Elon, Mackenzie Coleman scored twice while four others scored once. Goalkeeper Caitlin Walsh finished with 13 saves on a .419 save percentage.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Elon scored to open the game, before Stony Brook scored twice on goals from Hampel and Finn just eight seconds apart to grab the lead at the 9:05 mark.
- The Phoenix tied things at 2-2 at the 4:27 mark of the first period and again at 3-3 at the 1:05 mark to finish the quarter even.
- Down 4-3 in the second, the Seawolves netted goals from Masera and Finn to grab a 5-4 lead at the 10:27 mark.
- Masera then scored again for a 6-5 lead at 6:13 and Hampel scored to extend to 7-5 just 58 seconds later. Verhulst finished on a feed from Hart at the 3:48 mark to continue the run and finish the half at 8-5.
- Up 8-6 in the third, the Seawolves got back-to-back goals from Hart to push the lead to 10-6, and further extended by Dellecave, Finn and Fusco to put Stony Brook up 13-6 late in the third.
- The Seawolves scored all five goals in the fourth, with Hart and Masera scoring twice, and Millen scoring once.
NOTES, TRENDS AND RECORDS
- Stony Brook dominated on the shot board, 43-10 and in shots on goal, 31-8.
- The defense caused a season-high 14 opposition turnovers as a team and Elon's 24 turnovers marked the fourth time this season a Stony Brook opponent has committed at least 20 turnovers in a game.
- Stony Brook saw eight different goal scorers, the most since nine different players found the back of the net against Bryant on Feb. 20.
- Elon was held scoreless for the final 28:53 of game play as SBU finished the game on a 10-0 run.
- Hampel scored her first hat trick of the season and 10th of her career.
- Both Dellecave and Millen recorded their first career goals on the evening.
- Hines' five caused turnovers marks the most for a Stony Brook player this season.
