Men's Lacrosse Falls to Monmouth on Saturday at LaValle

STONY BROOK, N.Y. - The Stony Brook University men's lacrosse team fell to Monmouth, 11-6, on a rainy Saturday afternoon at LaValle Stadium. Four different Seawolves registered multiple points, but it was not enough to get past the Hawks.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Monmouth held Stony Brook scoreless in the opening quarter, though the Seawolves faced just a two-goal deficit after the first. Stony Brook out-shot Monmouth 10-8 in the frame, but just four were on net and all were handled by Tommy Heller.

The Hawks picked up a third goal before Noah Armitage tallied a man-up goal at the 10:16 mark of the second quarter to get the Seawolves on the board. Pallonetti followed with a goal of his own to make it 3-2 in favor of Monmouth. The Hawks scored four of the period's final five goals over the final eight minutes, taking a 7-3 lead into the break.
 
Monmouth's lead grew to six goals, 9-3, after scoring a pair of goals to begin the second half. Pallonetti registered Stony Brook's lone goal of the third quarter, taking the Seawolves into the fourth quarter facing a 10-4 deficit.
 
Stony Brook started the scoring in the fourth quarter in the opening minute, but did not tally another until the 2:41 mark in the frame. Monmouth answered with a goal at 1:50, closing out an 11-6 victory over the Seawolves.

STATS AND NOTES
  • Stony Brook out-shot Monmouth 45-29, with a 25-15 advantage in shots on goal. The Hawks' Heller made 19 saves.
  • Four different Seawolves registered a team-high two points. Armitage and Pallonetti led the way with two goals apiece, while Jack Dougherty tallied a goal and an assist and Nick Dupuis handed out a pair of assists.
  • Jamison MacLachlan played the final 30 minutes in cage for Stony Brook, accounting for all four of Stony Brook's saves.
  • Defensively, Christian Lowd and Michael Sabella caused a pair of turnovers. Carson Forney scooped up a team-high four ground balls.
  • Chris Esposito finished with a team-leading nine face-off wins.
  • Monmouth finished with a narrow 30-29 edge in ground balls.
  • Stony Brook moves to 1-1 all-time against Monmouth.
QUOTES FROM THE SEAWOLVES
"Very disappointed in our effort. We've been inconsistent all year and it showed," head coach Anthony Gilardi said. "We had plenty of chances to fight our way out of it [today]. We've got to take advantage of them."

UP NEXT
Stony Brook returns to action next Saturday, March 23 at Towson. The Tigers started the week receiving votes in both polls. Opening face-off is scheduled for noon in Maryland, with the contest streaming on FloLive.
