Stony Brook Earns Victory over Delaware in Weekend Opener at Joe Nathan Field

STONY BROOK, N.Y. -- Colin Rhein continued his dominance on the mound and Erik Paulsen closed the door, as the Stony Brook Seawolves brought home a 3-2 victory against the Delaware Fightin' Blue Hens on Friday to open up the three game series at Joe Nathan Field.

The solid outing from Rhein (4-3) earned him the victory on the mound for Stony Brook (24-23, 12-10 CAA). The right-hander went 6.1 innings, giving up two runs, both of them earned, on five hits, allowing no walks and striking out two. Erik Paulsen also pitched well, going 2.2 shutout innings without allowing a hit, walking none and striking out one. The freshman earned his sixth save of the season, which is third in the CAA.

On the offensive side, the Seawolves were paced by Matt Brown-Eiring, Cam Santerre, and E. Paulsen who all recorded RBI base-knocks in the victory. Also, Fox had a hit and scored a run, helping the squad earn their 24th win of the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Rhein was dealing early for the Seawolves this afternoon, after he went 1-2-3 in the first three innings. The right-hander was trusting his defense by earning two double-plays in the first three innings of play.

Stony Brook got on the scoreboard first, starting in the fourth inning. The Seawolves got on the board thanks to M. Brown-Eiring's RBI double with one out that brought Santerre to give the home team a 1-0 advantage. The rally began with Santerre tallying a single, followed by a bunt base-hit from E. Paulsen.

The Fightin' Blue Hens failed to push any runs across before the Seawolves offense got back to their scoring ways the next inning. Stony Brook picked up two runs in the frame from an RBI single from Santerre and RBI double by E. Paulsen, bringing the Stony Brook lead to 3-0.

Delaware put two runs on the scoreboard before the game was over, but E. Paulsen closed the door in the final 2.2 innings by not allowing any runs or hits to secure the 3-2 victory at Joe Nathan Field.
