STONY BROOK, N.Y. – The No. 14 Stony Brook women's lacrosse team has advanced to its second consecutive CAA Championship game after it downed the No. 4 seed Elon, 17-4, on Thursday afternoon at LaValle Stadium. With the win, the Seawolves extended their season-long winning streak to 11 games in a row and advanced to their 11
th conference championship game in the last 13 years.
The Seawolves were paced by a trio of scorers who recorded hat tricks. Graduate attack
Kailyn Hart led all scorers with a career-high tying seven goals and a career-high eight points. Senior midfielder
Ellie Masera also registered eight points as she finished the game with three goals and a career-high tying five assists. Graduate midfielder
Charlotte Verhulst added a hat trick of her own as the trio totaled 13 of the Seawolves' 17 goals.
With the eight points, Masera eclipsed 300 points in her career and 100 points this season. She is just the fifth player in program history to record over 300 points in their career and the sixth player to register 100 points or more in a single-season.
Stony Brook's defense dominated as it shutout Elon in the second half and limited them to just 15 shots in the game and four goals. The four goals were tied for the second fewest allowed in a game by the Seawolves (also allowed four goals against Delaware on April 6).
Junior defender
Avery Hines was a force on defense as she tied a career-high with six caused turnovers. Her six caused turnovers upped her season total to 55, which tied Brooke Gubitosi (2017) for the program single-season record in caused turnovers.
The Seawolves never trailed in the contest as they took an 8-4 lead into the halftime break. Stony Brook went on to outscore Elon, 9-0, in the second half and was fueled by Hart who scored six of her seven goals over the final 30 minutes.
