Stony Brook Falls to Hofstra at Joe Nathan Field

STONY BROOK, N.Y. -- Junior JT Raab allowed three runs over six innings and freshman Erik Paulsen surrendered one run over the final three innings, but the Hofstra Pride pitching staff held the Seawolves scoreless in their 4-0 victory this afternoon at Joe Nathan Field.

Raab (4-3) got the ball to start for Stony Brook (22-22, 10-10), making his ninth start of the season. The right-hander went six innings, giving up three runs, all of them earned, on six hits, allowing no walks and striking out two. E. Paulsen was a bright spot for the Seawolves, as he tallied two hits and threw three innings, giving up one run on five hits, with no walks and two strikeouts.

Offensively, E. Pauslen and senior Brett Paulsen both had multi-hit days for Stony Brook. Also, Ryan Micheli and Evan Fox both tallied a hit for the Seawolves in the 4-0 defeat.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • After Raab retired the Pride hitters in order in the first inning, the Seawolves got two runners on board in their half but were unable to push the runs across. E. Pauslen got the game started with a single to right, followed by a walk from senior Matt Brown-Eiring. Fox would single in the next turn at the plate but Hofstra threw out E. Paulsen at home and got the next two outs to keep the Seawolves scoreless.
  • Similarly in the second inning, Raab stranded a runner on base and the Stony Brook offense left two runners on in their turn at the dish. Back-to-back hits from senior Ryan Micheli and B. Paulsen got the inning going, but a double-play by the Seawolves and ground-out ended the rally.
  • Both teams went 1-2-3 in the third and Raab stranded a runner in the fourth before the Seawolves were held in check during their trip to the plate in the bottom half of the fourth inning.
  • Hofstra got the first run of the game in the fifth from a solo-shot off the bat of Kennedy.
  • Stony Brook stranded two runners on base in the bottom half of the fifth.
  • Following the 1-2-3 sixth inning by both teams, the Pride tacked on two more runs in the seventh and another run in the eighth.
  • The Seawolves loaded the bases in the eighth inning with two outs but were unable to push a run across after the strikeout to end the inning.
  • E. Paulsen stranded a runner on base in the top of the ninth to hold the score to 4-0. However, the Pride would hold on to the victory with a 1-2-3 inning in the final frame.
