BRIDGEPORT, Conn. -- Five Stony Brook players notched multiple hits, but the Seawolves fell to the Sacred Heart Pioneers 11-9 on Tuesday afternoon in their final non-conference regular season game of the year.
Nicholas Rizzo (3-6) came out of the bullpen for Stony Brook (23-23) and took the loss. The left-hander went two innings, giving up four runs, zero earned, on two hits, allowing two walks and striking out two. Also, Colton Book and Ty Stout made appearances out of the pen and combined for 4.2 innings, three runs, two earned, and struck out five batters. Quinlan Montgomery got the start for the Seawolves and allowed four runs over the first 1.1 innings.
Offensivley, Cam Santerre, Johnny Pilla, Matt Brown-Eiring, Brett Paulsen, and Evan Goforth all tallied at-least two hits in the defeat. Erik Paulsen and Nicholas Solorzano each recorded two RBI, while Santerre, Brown-Eiring and Matt Miceli all notched an RBI as well.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Seawolves got the scoring started early, putting the first runs on board in the top of the first inning. Stony Brook managed to push across two runs in the inning. The rally began with Santerre and Pilla getting back-to-back hits, followed by E. Paulsen and Brown-Eiring driving the duo in on ground-outs to take the 2-0 lead.
The Pioneers then rallied to score three runs and take a 3-2 lead before the Seawolves got back on the board in the second. Stony Brook scored once on an RBI single off the bat of C. Santerre, which evened the score at 3-3.
Sacred Heart busted up the tie and took a 6-3 lead heading into the sixth, when Stony Brook grabbed the advantage at 8-6. The Seawolves bats heated up in the inning, scoring five runs, including a two-run single off the bat of N. Solorzano and an RBI double from E. Paulsen.
Stony Brook surrendered the lead they built in the sixth, but got back on the board in the eighth trailing 10-8. J. Pilla crossed home plate with the lone run of the inning for the Seawolves, bringing the score to 10-9 in favor of Sacred Heart. The Seawolves were unable to get any closer, as Sacred Heart added one run to their tally on the way to an 11-9 final.
