Cote and Sovakova Score to Power Seawolves Past Colgate in Season Opener

STONY BROOK, N.Y. - The Stony Brook University women's soccer team notched a 2-1 victory over Colgate in the 2024 season opener on Thursday evening at LaValle Stadium. Gabrielle Côté and Aneta Sováková tallied goals, with Sovakova's being the first of her career and ultimately proving to be the game winner.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Stony Brook broke the ice when Gabrielle Cote scored Stony Brook's first goal of the season in the fifth minute, assisted by Luciana Setteducate.


The Raiders responded, tying the game on a goal by Ana Schremp in the 33rd minute. The game went into halftime even at 1-1. Stony Brook took a 2-1 lead on Aneta Sovakova's 47th-minute goal, the first of her career. Cote and Hedvig Helling assisted the goal.


Colgate played with 10 players on the field after a straight red card was issued in the 52nd minute, helping Stony Brook close out the 2-1 victory in the season opener at LaValle Stadium.

STATS AND NOTES
  • Côté finished with three points, scoring the opening goal of the match and earning the primary assist on the game winner. It was the first time in her career she tallied a goal and an assist in the same match.
  • Sováková's goal was the first of her collegiate career. The points were here first since recording a pair of assists in her freshman season (2021).
  • Setteducate assisted on the opening goal of the match, her first point of the season.
  • Helling's assist was the first of her collegiate career in her collegiate debut.
  • Nicolette Pasquarella totaled five saves for the Seawolves, earning her first win of the season and the 10th of her career.
  • Stony Brook finished with a 16-12 edge in shots and a 7-6 advantage in shots on goal.

"Happy with the win. It's always great after the long preseason to finally get going and playing at LaValle Stadium," head coach Tobias Bischof said. "Coming out on top is the goal and we accomplished that today. I'm very happy with the win."

NEXT UP 
Stony Brook hits the road for the first in 2024, facing Maryland on Sunday, August 18. The Seawolves and Terrapins are set for a 1 p.m. kickoff in College Park, with the match streaming live on BIG Ten Plus.
