Stony Brook Earns Draw on the Road at Maryland

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Stony Brook University women's soccer team played to a 2-2 draw with Maryland on Sunday afternoon at Ludwig Field. Gabrielle Côté and Leah Rifas both netted a goal in the match, each of which came within minutes of go-ahead goals by the Terps.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Maryland opened the scoring in the second minute when Kelsey Smith put one past Nicolette Pasquarella after a through ball up ahead got behind the defense. The Seawolves evened the match on a goal from Côté – her second goal of the season – in the tenth minute, assisted by Sammy Hannwacker.

Maryland went on back in front, 2-1, on Lisa Mcintyre's 40th-minute goal. A deflected pass bounded back towards goal, allowing a breakaway that the Terps buried to regain the lead. The Seawolves responded again, just two minutes later, when Leah Rifas scored the first goal of her collegiate career. Hannah Maracina assisted on Stony Brook's second game-tying goal of the match.

The Seawolves had chances in the second half, most notably on a free kick from Hannwacker that Liz Beardsley dove full extension to stop to keep the score level.

Maryland had a pair of chances in the 89th minute, but both tries were blocked by Stony Brook defenders. The 2-2 score would hold, earning Stony Brook its first result against Maryland in program history.

STATS AND NOTES
  • Côté netted her second goal of the season, tying the match at 1-1 in the 10th minute. Through two matches, Côté leads the team with five points (two goals, one assist).
  • Rifas' goal was the first of her collegiate career. She is Stony Brook's first freshman to score a goal this season.
  • Hannwacker and Maracina tallied an assist apiece. The assists were the first of the season, respectively, for Hannwacker and Maracina.
  • Pasquarella made three saves, remaining unbeaten as the Seawolves' starting keeper through two matches.
  • Maryland finished with a 15-9 edge in shots, though Stony Brook held a narrow 7-6 advantage in shots on goal.
  • Stony Brook finished with nine corner kicks.

QUOTES FROM THE SEAWOLVES
"Before the game we talked about making a statement and I believe we did that. It's not easy to play your second game of the season at a Power-4 school, but we didn't shy away," head coach Tobias Bischof said. "I'm proud of the team on how they performed. Now we turn the page and get ready for FDU."

NEXT UP

Stony Brook returns to Long Island to host FDU on August 22. The Seawolves and Knights are set for a 5 p.m. kickoff at LaValle Stadium with the match streaming live on FloFC.
