STONY BROOK, N.Y. Stony Brook football begins its 2024 season with a road battle against FBS foe Marshall on Saturday evening at Joan C. Edwards Stadium in West Virginia, as the Seawolves embark on the Coach Cosh era.

OPENING KICK
  • Stony Brook football is set for its season opener tonight, taking on Marshall in West Virginia.
  • The Seawolves finished the 2023 season 0-10 and in last place in the CAA with a 0-8 record.
  • Marshall is the only FBS team on the 2024 slate for the Seawolves. The Labor Day weekend trip to Huntington, W. Va. will be Stony Brook's second consecutive and second-ever matchup against the Sun Belt, having traveled to Arkansas State in 2023.
  • The Marshall match-up will continue Stony Brook's streak of playing an FBS opponent in every full season since 2010 and the Seawolves can pick up their second all-time win (Army, 2012) over an FBS opponent in the Week 1 match-up.
  • SBU has played within two scores of four other FBS opponents since 2012 and came within three points of upsetting Buffalo in 2013 and UConn in 2014, with the Buffalo game being decided in five overtimes.
  • All time, Stony Brook has played opponents from the following FBS conferences - American Athletic Conference (4 times), MAC (3 – with one cancelation mid-game), Mountain West (2), Big East (1), PAC-12 (1), Sun Belt (1), and two FBS Independents.
  • Stony Brook will play 12 games in its regular season slate for the first time since 2019, where it finished 5-7. The Seawolves will play six times at home, also reaching that mark for the first time since playing seven home games in 2019.
WELCOME TO THE COSH ERA 
  • Billy Cosh was named the third head coach in Stony Brook football's Division I era on December 13, 2023.
  • Cosh joined Stony Brook for his first career head coaching job after spending the 2023 season at Western Michigan as the Broncos' offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach.
  • Prior to Western Michigan, Cosh spent three years as an FCS offensive coordinator with Richmond and VMI. He started his coaching career at Concord University (Md.) as an offensive graduate assistant and quarterbacks coach.
  • Cosh played five seasons of college football as a quarterback, playing at Houston (2013-14), Butler Community College (2012), James Madison (2011) and Kansas State (2010). He led Butler CC to the 2012 NJCCA National Championship, throwing for 2,856 yards and 25 touchdowns that season. He graduated with a degree in sociology from Houston in 2015.
  • Cosh will be the second-youngest head coach (32 years old) in Division I football, at both the FCS and FBS level. Only Incarnate Word's Clint Killough (31 years old) is younger.
  • Cosh is the son of legendary coach Chris Cosh, who made stops at over 15 schools that includes Maryland, Kansas State, South Carolina, Michigan State, Illinois, Minnesota, Virginia Tech, South Florida, Hampton, Richmond, Delaware, and Buffalo. He served as a defensive coordinator in five of the six BCS conferences (Big Ten, SEC, ACC, Big 12, and Big East).
THE COACHING STAFF
  • Under the program's new head coach in Billy Cosh, Stony Brook football announced Anthony Davis II as the program's next offensive coordinator and Scott Lewis as the program's next defensive coordinator.
  • Davis, who will also serve as the wide receivers coach, re-joins Cosh from Western Michigan, where he previously served as the running backs coach for the 2023 season.
  • Lewis spent the last three seasons at Saint Francis (Pa.), where he guided the Red Flash to top-20 FCS ranks in four categories in 2022.
  • Stony Brook also added D.J. Gillins (Running Backs Coach), Adam Lovan (Quarterbacks Coach/Offensive Recruiting Coordinator), Sam Howson (Offensive Assistant), and Bryan Valenti (Offensive Assistant) to the offensive coaching staff while Kevin Elliott (Special Teams Coordinator/Outside Linebackers Coach), Marcus Hall-Oliver (Safeties Coach/Defensive Pass Game Coordinator), Zuril Hendrick (Cornerbacks Coach), and Dermot McDonough (Defensive Graduate Assistant) join the staff on the defensive and special teams side of the ball.
  • Stony Brook retained Chris Bache (Offensive Line Coach), Sean Hammonds (Defensive Line Coach/Defensive Recruiting Coordinator), Josh Heinrich (Director of Football Operations), Billy Barber (Special Teams Assistant) and Steve Martino (Tight Ends Coach) on the staff for the upcoming year.
WELCOME TO LONG ISLAND
  • Stony Brook was active in the transfer portal all off-season, with signees from the FBS, FCS, Junior College, and Division II level.
  • The transfers include: Deshawn Jones Jr. (Bowling Green), Kris Caine (Old Dominion), Shamoun Duncan-Niusulu (Bowling Green), Jasiah Williams (Richmond), Chance Knox (VMI), Rudy Sulvera (LIU), Tyler Knoop (Georgetown), Tyson McCloud (Dartmouth), Josh Kaye (New Haven), and Damion Powell (Southwestern Oklahoma St.).
  • On Feb. 7, 2024, Stony Brook announced the signing of eight new players to its class of 2024 on National Signing Day, bringing their total to 10 incoming freshmen for the signing class of 2024.
  • The signing class included the 2023 New York State Player of the Year Sebastian Regis, QB Malachi Marshall from South Carolina, who amassed over 4,100 passing yards and 36 total touchdowns in his final two high school seasons, an All-State safety and candidate for Mr. PA Football in Sam Cooper and Jayson Allen who recorded 57 tackles (28 solo), 12 TFLs, three sacks and blocked four punts along with a field goal as a senior.
NEW LEADERS ON THE FIELD
  • Cal Redman, Jasiah Williams, Taylor Bolesta and Rodney Faulk have been named the captains for the 2024 season.
  • Redman, who was a captain last season, started all 10 games for the Seawolves at TE last season. He finished with 210 receiving yards in total and 15 catches in 2023.
  • Bolesta, who was also a captain last season, was named Phil Steele Fifth Team All-CAA after tallying seven solo tackles and 13 assisted for 20 total stops in 2023.
  • Williams joins Stony Brook after spending the previous four seasons at Richmond. At Richmond, Williams tallied 140 receptions and 1164 yards for six touchdowns.
  • Faulk, entering his fourth season with Stony Brook, had six solo tackles and nine assisted tackles for 15 total in 2023. He also contributed 3.0 sacks for 20 yards, 4.5 tackles for loss for 21 yards and was tied for team lead in TFLs.
  • Each week, Stony Brook will select a new team captain to fill the fifth role. For the opening game, Coach Cosh and the Seawolves have selected Chance Knox to be the fifth captain representing the special teams.
