Stony Brook Begins 2025-26 Campaign with Opening Night Win

STONY BROOK, N.Y. - The Stony Brook men's basketball team officially opens the year in the win column as it bested Farmingdale State 66-59 on Monday at Stony Brook Arena.

How It Happened

  • The night began with seven straight points for the Seawolves as Quin Gorman opened up scoring with a layup 30 seconds in.
  • Richard Goods took charge of the offense for much of the first half, scoring his first points as a Seawolf on a three-pointer at 18:19, before adding seven more by the 10-minute mark. He also reached six rebounds by the halfway mark in the half.
  • The Rams, despite being limited on offense, were still able to keep it close throughout the first, trailing just 16-11 with under nine to play.
  • Andrej Shoshkikj and Tomas Valentiny, both playing in their first ever games in the United States, started to get going offensively in the waning minutes of the first half. Shoshkikj scored five straight on a steal and a bucket at 8:27, followed up with a three-pointer at 7:59, while Valentiny got a pair of assists on dunks from Goods and Quinn Gorman, as well as getting one of his own at 2:59.
  • Entering the second half holding on to a slim 30-22 lead, the Seawolves got a pair of much-needed threes from Gorman and, in his first appearance since March 12, 2024, Toby Onyekonwu to make it 38-29 with under 15 to play.
  • From 13:15-11:24, Farmingdale State scored seven unanswered to cut the Seawolves lead to 38-36, before eventually tying up the game at 41-41 at 9:53.
  • The Rams would get no further than that, however, Collin O'Connor responded with his first triple at 9:35 to give the lead back to Stony Brook.
  • From there, it was all Shoshkikj for the rest of the game as he logged 13 more points in the half on four free throws, two layups, and one three-pointer. Along with two points each from Valentiny and Rob Brown III, this was enough to carry the Seawolves to victory over the Rams 66-69.

Stats and Notes

  •  Shoshkikj led the Seawolves with a game-high 20 points in his NCAA debut.
  •  Gorman and Valentiny paced the team with nine rebounds apiece.

  •  The Seawolves held the Rams to only 35.7 percent shooting from the field.
