SYRACUSE, N.Y. — Despite a strong effort coming out of the locker room to begin the second half, Stony Brook ultimately fell on the road at Syracuse, 74-50. Caitlin Frost led the way offensively, matching a career-best effort in her first game as a Seawolf with 19 points.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Frost started the game with back-to-back baskets, putting the Seawolves and the Orange at a 4-4 deadlock through the first three minutes. Syracuse took control over the final seven minutes of the opening stanza, using an 18-4 run over the final seven minutes of action to take a 22-6 advantage into the second quarter.
Stony Brook held its ground in the second quarter, but could not put together a stretch of baskets to whittle into the deficit it faced after the opening 10 minutes. Syracuse had an answer for the Seawolves' baskets, maintaining a 16-point lead and carrying the double-digit advantage into the halftime break.
After intermission, Stony Brook cut its deficit to 42-28 before going on a 9-0 run, punctuated by a three from Frost, to make it a five-point game with 2:32 to go in the third. Out of a timeout, the Orange countered with a 10-0 run that extended their lead to double digits again heading into the final frame.
Stony Brook could not pull any closer in the fourth, eventually falling by a final of 74-50.
STATS AND NOTES
- Frost poured in 19 points on 7-of-16 shooting. She connected on three shots from beyond the arc, added five rebounds and registered three steals. Frost's 19 points, three triples and three steals matched career-best marks.
- Janay Brantley and Melissa Mwanza combined to score 17 points. Brantley, Frost and Mwanza accounted for 36 of Stony Brook's 50 points in the contest.
- Mwanza secured a team-best seven rebounds, with four of them coming on the offensive glass.
- Sandra Frau Garcia dished out five assists, a game-high.
- As an offensive unit, Stony Brook shot 40 percent (6-15) from three-point range.
- Syracuse out-rebounded Stony Brook 52-27, including a 16-9 advantage on the offensive glass.
- The Orange registered 54 points in the paint and 15 second-chance points.
- Stony Brook fell to 0-6 all-time against Syracuse.
