HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. — Stony Brook battled back after conceding an early goal, scoring in the 79th and 80th minutes to shock the top-seeded Hofstra Pride, 2-1, in the CAA North Division Semifinal on Sunday afternoon.
Scemar Webb leveled the match and Ryan Farr netted the game-winner, with Nelson Reynoso providing the primary assist on both goals.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Hofstra grabbed an early lead when Laurie Goddard's right-footed strike deflected off a Stony Brook defender and bounded into the back of the net. The unfortunate bounce put the Pride ahead less than 10 minutes into the contest.
Despite three corner kick opportunities, Stony Brook's offense did not register a shot through the opening 45 minutes. The Pride tried seven shots in the opening half, with Heidar Hermannsson turning away two of the three on target towards goal.
Trailing by a goal, Stony Brook weathered a flurry of offensive chances for the Pride to remain within striking distance. Physical play on both sides led to cards being issued throughout the entire match, but it was Hofstra who suffered the most when Thengill Orrason was booked for a second time, leaving the Pride a man down for the final 13-plus minutes of regulation.
The advantage paid immediate dividends, seeing Stony Brook score twice in a 42-second span to flip the fixture completely on its head. Webb was the beneficiary of a beautiful cross from Reynoso, heading home the equalizing goal in the 79th minute.
A stunned crowd at Captains Field watched as Reynoso played another perfect ball in toward the box that Farr headed through the legs of Hofstra's keeper. 42 seconds after evening the match, Stony Brook found itself in front.
Stony Brook locked down defensively, closing out a road victory over a nationally-ranked opponent to secure a spot in the CAA Final next weekend.
