STONY BROOK, N.Y. — Stony Brook fell to St. John's, 73-42, on Wednesday evening on Long Island. Diaka Berete led the Seawolves with 17 points, eight rebounds and four steals.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Stony Brook played a strong first quarter, keeping the Red Storm on their heels through the opening 10 minutes. St. John's raced out to an early 10-2 lead, but the Seawolves fought back to make it a six-point game heading to the second quarter behind a pair of baskets from Caitlin Frost.
St. John's added to its lead, building a 25-14 advantage before Stony Brook went on a 6-0 run to narrow its deficit to 25-20 with four minutes to play in the half. St. John's responded, expanding the lead to double-figures, leaving the Seawolves trailing 35-24 heading into halftime.
St. John's continued to increase its lead after halftime, building a 42-24 advantage before Stony Brook used another extended run, this time an eight-point spurt, punctuated by a basket from Berete to trim its deficit to 10 points again. St. John's countered and stretched its lead to 51-33 behind a 7-0 run of its own to close the third quarter.
Stony Brook could not pull any closer in the fourth, losing by the eventual final of 73-42.
STATS AND NOTES
- Berete paced the Seawolves with a game-high 17 points. Berete finished 7-of-15 from the floor, adding eight rebounds and four steals on the defensive end.
- Stony Brook limited St. John's to a 4-for-14 mark from three-point range.
- The two sides each grabbed 30 rebounds. The Seawolves finished with a 9-8 edge on the offensive glass.
- The Red Storm forced the Seawolves into 22 turnovers, converting the miscues into 28 points on the other end of the floor.
- St. John's finished with a 42-22 edge on points in the paint.
