STONY BROOK, N.Y. — Stony Brook women's basketball defeated Duquesne, 52-39, on a snowy Sunday afternoon in Stony Brook. The Seawolves held Duquesne to a 5.9 percent mark (1-for-17) from three-point range and forced 21 turnovers in a victory over its Atlantic 10 foe.
The Seawolves saw two players score in double figures, led by Janay Brantley, who had 14 points and three steals on the defensive end. Sandra Frau Garcia added 11 points and two steals, while Caitlin Frost added nine points, 11 rebounds and two steals.
HOW IT HAPPENED
After jumping out to a 9-5 advantage, Stony Brook went on a 5-0 run with 3:43 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from Brantley, to increase its lead to 14-5. The Seawolves entered the quarter break with a 14-9 advantage. Stony Brook relied on its three-point shooting in the period, knocking down three shots to account for nine of its 14 points.
Stony Brook went on a 7-0 run starting at the 9:08 mark in the second period to increase its lead to 21-11. The Seawolves kept that lead for the remainder of the period and enjoyed a 26-16 advantage heading into halftime. Stony Brook dominated in the paint, scoring six of its 12 points close to the basket.
Following intermission, Stony Brook continued to expand its advantage, pushing the lead to 36-21 before a 5-0 run expanded the advantage further, 41-21, with 37 seconds to go in the third. Stony Brook played well near the basket in the third period, scoring 12 of its 16 points in the paint.
The Seawolves cruised the rest of the way, registering a 52-39 win over Duquesne. Stony Brook held the Dukes to a 14-for-59 showing from the floor and a 1-for-17 mark from three-point range.
STATS AND NOTES
- The Seawolves held the Dukes to only 23.7 percent (14-59) shooting from the field.
- Stony Brook limited Duquesne to one make from three-point range on 17 attempts.
- The 39 points against is the second-lowest mark this season for a Stony Brook opponent. The 39 points represent the lowest scoring output by a Division I opponent since limiting Hampton to just 35 points on March 7, 2024.
- The Stony Brook defense forced 21 turnovers, converting the takeaways into 20 points.
- Brantley led the Seawolves with a game-high 14 points. Stony Brook got a game-high 11 rebounds from Frost, who finished a point shy of a double-double.
- Stony Brook's win over Duquesne represented the first in program history and the third all-time against an Atlantic 10 foe. The Seawolves entered play 2-23 against A-10 programs and today's contest marked the first in program history between the two schools.
