Stony Brook Cannot Hold On vs. Hampton in CAA Opener

HAMPTON, Va. - The Seawolves led for much of the night but could not close it out as they dropped the CAA opener 62-59 at Hampton.

How It Happened

  • Both teams traded leads throughout the opening minutes of the half, with Stony Brook initially taking a 5-2 edge off a layup from Quin Gorman and a three from Ethan Simmon. Three minutes in and with the Seawolves behind 6-5, Richard Goods went up and threw down a massive dunk against his old team to retake the lead. After again falling behind 10-7, Stony Brook went on a 10-0 run, featuring five more points from Simmon, to make it 17-10 with just over 13 minutes to play.
  • Goods would keep it a seven-point game with another dunk at 12:48. Though the Pirates briefly took a one-point lead at the 10-minute mark, Toby Onyekonwu came up with a clutch three-pointer followed by an and-one from Simmon to put the Seawolves back on top 25-20.
  • Following six-straight Pirates points tied the game back up at 25-25 with seven minutes remaining, Erik Pratt drained his first three of the night 30 seconds later to take the lead right back. After Hampton again tied it three minutes later, Pratt came up with the putback to give the Seawolves a 30-28 lead.
  • With Stony Brook still holding on to a two-point lead in the final minute, Hampton made just its second three-pointer of the half to go up 33-32. Once again, though, Pratt got it done with a layup with just 23 seconds remaining to send it to halftime 34-33.
  • The Seawolves were held to just a single bucket each for Pratt and Simmon through the first five minutes of the half as the Pirates regained the lead 41-38. It would take until 13:20 for Stony Brook to retake the lead on a deep three from Pratt to make it 42-41. Pratt followed up with another three just 50 seconds later, before Tomas Valentiny capped off what became a 12-0 run with his first triple to make it 48-41 with 11:30 to play.
  • Stony Brook continued to do most of its damage from deep, as Rob Brown III dialed up from deep to extend the lead to 51-43 with under 10 to play. Two minutes later, Onyekonwu would be fouled behind the arc and subsequently made all three free throws to give the Seawolves their largest lead yet at 55-45.
  • After retaking the lead, the Seawolves would go scoreless over the next five minutes as the Pirates came all the way back to cut the lead to one, eventually taking a 59-57 lead with just over two minutes to play.
  • A fastbreak layup from Simmon would briefly tie the game back up at 59-59 with 1:10 left, but three-straight Hampton free throws were enough to finish off the game.

Stats and Notes

  • Pratt posted his eighth game of the season with over 20 points as he led the way with exactly 20. Entering the game with 911 career points, he is now at 931.
  • Simmon, in his first start, took only 11 minutes to reach double figures on the night as he went on to finish with a career-high 17 points thanks to a personal best six field goals.
  • Valentiny, also in his first career start, contributed four points and five rebounds.
