PISCATAWAY, N.J. – It was a come from behind effort from the Stony Brook women's lacrosse team trailing by as many as three goals but piecing together a fourth quarter surge to force overtime. Rutgers ultimately came away with a 12-11 victory as Payton Tini scored the game winner with 2:21 remaining in the overtime period.
The Seawolves had a quartet record multi-goal games as
Charlotte Wilmoth and
Alexandra Fusco each tallied a hat trick.
Riley McDonald and
Kylie Budke scored two goals apiece.
Defensively,
Avery Hines tallied four caused turnovers and two ground balls.
Isabella Caporuscio won a team-high four draw controls, while collecting four ground balls and three caused turnovers.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Despite the defeat, Stony Brook showed grit as it rallied in the fourth to tie the game up at 11-11, after trailing, 10-8, at the beginning of the quarter.
With 45 seconds remaining in regulation,
Casey Colbert passed out to Budke making a cut to the crease, dodging a pair of defenders and found the back of the net to send the game into overtime. For Budke, it was her second goal of the game and her third of the season.
Rutgers won the opening draw to begin overtime but after yellow cards on Caporuscio and the Scarlet Knights' Samantha Swanovich, Stony Brook gained possession and was able to run a successful clear before taking a timeout.
The Seawolves were unable to find an open look and would be dealt a shot clock violation with only 24 seconds to go. An untimely yellow card from Budke let Rutgers run the time down, switch sides and begin the second part of overtime, woman-up.
49 seconds in, Tini would get a pass in the eight-meter arc, charing over A. Fusco with a spin move and shot to tally her second goal of the game which proved to be the game winner.
