Panariello Shines, Seawolves Clinch Series over Campbell with Win

STONY BROOK, N.Y. – The Stony Brook baseball team scored two runs in the first inning and right-hander Ty Panariello allowed just one run over 7.2 innings to lead the Seawolves to a 5-1 victory over Campbell on Saturday afternoon, clinching the series win at Joe Nathan Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Stony Brook right-hander Ty Panariello took the mound for the Seawolves and retired the side in order to start the game, striking out the final batter of the inning.
  • The Seawolves struck first in the bottom half of the opening frame. Erik Paulsen drew a one-out walk and scored on a triple to the right-center gap by Nico Azpilcueta to give Stony Brook a 1-0 lead. Chanz Doughty followed with a groundout to first that plated Azpilcueta, pushing the lead to 2-0.
  • Panariello returned in the second and set down all three Campbell hitters, including a pair of fly-outs. Luke Szepek opened the bottom of the second with a leadoff double, but the Seawolves were held off the board.
  • In the top of the third, after retiring the first two batters, Panariello allowed his first hit on a double to left, but induced a fly-out to end the frame and maintain the 2-0 lead.
  • The Seawolves added another run in the bottom of the third. Nick Zampieron led off with a single and advanced on an error before Paulsen drove him in with a double to left-center, making it 3-0.
  • After a leadoff walk in the fourth, Panariello induced a 4-6-3 double play and later stranded two Camels to escape the inning unscathed. Brett Davino roped a double in the bottom of the fourth, but the score remained 3-0.
  • Panariello struck out two batters in the fifth and ended the frame with a fielder's choice, keeping Campbell off the scoreboard.
  • Paulsen led off the bottom of the fifth with a walk, and Azpilcueta followed by launching a two-run homer to left field, extending the Seawolves' lead to 5-0.
  • Panariello worked another clean inning in the sixth, retiring the Camels in order. The Seawolves were also retired in order in the bottom of the inning.
  • Stony Brook's right-hander stayed sharp in the seventh with another 1-2-3 inning. Azpilcueta ripped a one-out double in the home half of the seventh, but Campbell stranded him on base.
  • Campbell broke through in the top of the eighth with their lone run of the game. Left-hander George Adams came on in relief and got the final out of the inning on a fielder's choice.
  • The Seawolves went down quietly in the bottom of the eighth. Adams returned in the ninth and stranded two Camels to lock down the 5-1 victory.
