STONY BROOK, N.Y. – The Stony Brook Seawolves exploded for 13 runs in the first three innings and right-hander
Eddie Smink delivered a smooth, seven-inning performance as the Seawolves cruised to a 17–3 statement win over Hofstra on Friday afternoon. The victory marked the largest margin of victory over the Pride in program history.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- After a quiet first inning at the plate, Smink gave up a leadoff single but quickly settled in, retiring the next three batters to leave the runner stranded.
- Chanz Doughty sparked the second inning with a leadoff single and came around to score a few batters later on a base knock from Chris Carson. Brett Davino stepped up and launched his first homer of the season — a three-run bomb — to put the Seawolves up 4–0. Later in the inning, Doughty came back to the plate and lit up a grand slam, giving Stony Brook a commanding 8–0 lead.
- In the bottom half, Smink allowed a one-out walk but calmly retired the next two to keep the Pride scoreless.
- The third inning brought more fireworks. Luke Szepek doubled to lead things off and trotted home on Carson's opposite-field homer. A few batters later, Erik Paulsen drove in Davino with a single, and Nico Azpilcueta laced a double to right-center to bring home Nick Zampieron, capping off a five-run frame and giving the Seawolves a 13–0 cushion.
- Smink kept it rolling in the third, striking out the leadoff hitter and working around a single to end the frame with two quick flyouts.
- In the fourth, Matt Miceli and Zampieron each knocked two-out singles, but Stony Brook couldn't push a run across. Hofstra finally broke through in the bottom half with a two-out RBI double to make it 13–1.
- Azpilcueta opened the fifth with a leadoff double and scored on a clutch, two-out RBI single from Szepek. Carson followed with a scorching triple to bring in another, stretching the lead to 15–1. Smink then retired the side in order to lock down a quick sixth.
- The Seawolves were quiet in the sixth, but Smink stayed hot, tossing another 1-2-3 inning heading into the seventh.
- Miceli and Nick Solorzano each drew bases-loaded walks in the top of the seventh to pad the lead to 17–1. Hofstra scratched across two in the bottom half, but the damage had long been done, as Stony Brook wrapped up a 17–3 mercy-rule victory.
