Stony Brook Tops Campbell to Open CAA Play

STONY BROOK, N.Y. - Stony Brook grabbed a 2-1 victory over Campbell in the 2025 CAA opener on Thursday evening at LaValle Stadium. Maya Corbett and Reilly Rich scored, and the Seawolves held off a late surge to move their unbeaten streak to seven straight matches.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Stony Brook seemed to control much of the action in the early going, possessing the ball for a majority of the half. Campbell settled in and did well to hold off Stony Brook's attack, which managed just three first-half shots (one on goal). The Camels tried six shots during the opening 45 minutes, forcing Jona Hennings to make a pair of stops in goal. The match held scoreless through the end of the first half and deep into the second half.

Both sides had chances throughout the second half, but it was Stony Brook that broke through in the 73rd minute. Maya Corbett was the beneficiary of a bounce that went Stony Brook's way, finding the back of the net off of a deflection to open the scoring. Minutes later, the Seawolves' Emanuelly Ferreira was taken down in the box. Initially, the official signaled for the two sides to play on. Upon a stoppage for a throw-in, the officials went to the table to review the play from earlier and awarded Stony Brook a penalty kick. Reilly Rich stepped up and buried it on behalf of Stony Brook, giving the Seawolves a two-goal cushion with less than 16 minutes to play.

Campbell narrowed the gap to 2-1 on Zahra Fepessi's goal with less than five minutes to play, but Stony Brook held off Campbell's late push to emerge victorious in the CAA opener.

STATS AND NOTES
  • Corbett opened the scoring with the first goal of her collegiate career.
  • Rich buried a PK to make it 2-0, setting a new career-high with her ninth goal of the season. The graduate student leads the CAA with nine goals through nine matches.
  • Jona Hennings piled up five saves for the Seawolves out of 18 total shots.
  • Stony Brook increased its unbeaten streak to seven straight games and has now won six of its last seven contests.
