Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Stony Brook Falls in Back and Forth Matchup vs. First Place UNCW

STONY BROOK, N.Y. - On a night that saw Erik Pratt become the second Seawolf this year to reach 1,000 career points, the Seawolves could not pull off the upset over first-place UNCW Saturday night as they led for much of the game but in the end were bested 75-71 by the reigning CAA champions.

How It Happened

  • Erik Pratt wasted no time getting started tonight as he quickly knocked down a three-pointer on the opening possession, followed by another jumper two minutes later to get within nine points of 1,000. The Seawolves would then capitalize on a steal from Richard Goods and a block from Quin Gorman as they soon took a 9-0 lead.
  • Out of the first media timeout, Rob Brown III kept it a nine-point game as he immediately drained his first three to make it 14-5. With just under 13 minutes remaining, Pratt would make another jumper to extend the lead to 10 and reach 995 career points, before tossing one up to Tomas Valentiny who cashed in to make it 20-8.
  • With just over 10 minutes left in the half, Jonah Butler and Andrej Shoshkikj continued the offensive barrage with back-to-back buckets to grow the lead to 27-10. Meanwhile, Goods and Gorman led the way on defense with another block and a steal to keep UNCW off the board, allowing the offense to grow the lead to 33-12 inside of seven minutes.
  • The lead went as high as 23 after Brown second triple of the night with three minutes to play. A minute later Pratt would also get his second of the day from behind the arc to finish off the half for Stony Brook with a 43-21 advantage.
  • Right out of the gate Pratt took the first possession for the Seawolves and immediately got the job done as he hit the stepback to officially reach 1,000 career points.
  • Following Pratt's bucket, however, the Seahawks completely took over the court, going on a 24-0 scoring run over the next six minutes to erase Stony Brook's lead all the way down from 24 as the game was all tied up at 45-45. An and-one from Pratt at 13:07 finally put an end to the run and gave the Seawolves back the lead.
  • Both teams traded multiple leads over the next few minutes as neither team scored twice in a row for over six minutes. Pratt and Brown broke that streak with seven minutes remaining to give Stony Brook a 60-58 edge, only for the Seahawks to take the lead right back 20 seconds later.
  • With two minutes remaining, UNCW took its largest lead of the night at 70-63. Another three from Brown and a dunk by Goods got it back down to a four-point lead with a minute to go, but that would be as close as it would get as UNCW just managed to hold on.

Stats and Notes

  • Entering the game with 986 points, Pratt reached 1,000 just 14 seconds into the second half. Scoring 24 total tonight, (his eighth 20+ point game of the season) he now has 1010 in his career.
  • Brown III joined Pratt as the second Seawolf this year to reach 10 double-digit scoring games after totaling 24 tonight. This is his second game with over 20 points and his fourth in a row with at least three triples after going 6-for-9. Brown also tied his season-high with eight field goals made.
  • This is the second time this year two Seawolves scored over 20 each in a game, with Pratt and Shoshkikj doing so vs. N.C. A&T on January 3.
  • Gorman led the defense with a career-high four blocks.
