Stony Brook Makes it Four in a Row Over Hofstra

STONY BROOK, N.Y. - For the fourth time in a row, the Seawolves have emerged victorious over intrastate rival Hofstra after besting the Pride 76-71 on Thursday night in the first meeting of the season. Stony Brook hands Hofstra its first CAA loss of the season and snaps its eight-game winning streak.

How It Happened

  • Both offenses started off slow in the first as each team was held to just a field goal apiece through the opening four minutes. Stony Brook began to heat up soon after, though, going on a 10-0 run bookended by triples from Tomas Valentiny and Andrej Shoshkikj to make it 12-3. Meanwhile, Hofstra had multiple costly turnovers early on, including one on a block from Oleg Kojenets, and was held to just three points through the first eight minutes of the night.
  • By the nine-minute mark, Hofstra had chipped the deficit down to one as Stony Brook led 15-14. A triple from Toby Onyekonwu briefly swung momentum back to the Seawolves, but it was not enough to slow the Pride as they went on to retake the lead at 19-18 with seven and a half to play.
  • Blocks from Erik Pratt and Richard Goods helped keep Hofstra from getting into a rhythm on offense, allowing the former to put the Seawolves back in front 24-19 after scoring six straight points inside of six minutes.
  • With three minutes to play Rob Brown III and Shoshkikj each knocked down a three to regrow the lead to seven. With the Pride threatening to make it a one-score game to end the half, a key defensive rebound from Kojenets would setup Pratt to take one last shot as he nailed the turnaround jumper with two seconds left to end the first period 32-25.
  • After another relatively quiet start to the half for both teams, Shoshkikj made it a nine-point game at 17:35 when he caught the inbound and immediately let it fly for a three-pointer. A minute later, he would extend the lead to 39-28 with a pullup jumper. Goods and Brown would follow up with a triple each to soon make it 45-33 with just over 15 to play.
  • 10 minutes into the half Stony Brook saw its lead cut down to five at 49-44. Goods would knock down two more three-pointers over the next two minutes to get the lead back into double-digits at 57-47. With just over six minutes left Goods would add another from behind the arc to grow the lead to 12.
  • Though the Pride was able to pull back within six with five to play, an and-one from Shoshkikj and a driving layup from Pratt made it 67-56 with four minutes remaining. Goods would keep it a double-digit lead when he grabbed an offensive board and threw it down for a dunk at 2:37.
  • With two minutes left in the game, Hofstra picked up eight more points, but foul trouble allowed the Seawolves to put things away for good with seven more from the charity stripe. Though the Pride added three of their own with 10 seconds remaining to pull within three, it was not enough to stop the Seawolves from taking the game 76-71.

Stats and Notes

  • Shoshkikj had his sixth double-digit scoring game and fourth game with over 20 points tonight after finishing with an even 20. He also went 3-for-3 from the line to keep his perfect FT% intact at 22-for-22.
  • Goods had his sixth double-digit scoring game with a career-high 20. In addition to this, he set new personal bests with four triples and six assists.
  • Pratt recorded his 17th double-digit scoring game of the season and 13th in a row after finishing with 18 tonight.
  • The Seawolves held Hofstra's Cruz Davis to zero points in the first half. Davis, who played all 20 minutes, entered the week as the leading scorer in the conference and top 10 in the nation.
  • The Seawolves totaled 12 three-pointers tonight, giving them seven games this year with 10+ three-pointers.
