Seawolves Score 112 in 2OT Thriller Over Charleston

STONY BROOK, N.Y. - For the first time in program history, the Seawolves have defeated Charleston after a double overtime marathon that ended with Stony Brook on top 112-106. The combined 218 points tied the CAA record for a conference game.

Erik Pratt led the way with one of the greatest performances in program history, scoring a career-high 39 points with a career-high 13 assists. This makes him the first Seawolf since Jaron Cornish against Maine on January 19, 2019 to record double digit assists and the first since Tommy Brenton vs. Maine on January 26, 2013 to record a double-double or triple-double with assists.

How It Happened
  • Both teams traded buckets throughout the opening minutes of the day, with Erik Pratt knocking down back-to-back three-pointers, followed by one from Andrej Shoshkikj to keep it a one-point game. Stony Brook's fourth triple of the game, courtesy of Richard Goods, would tie up the game at 14-14, before Pratt gave the Seawolves their first lead of the day with a jumper at 14:56.
  • Rob Brown III and Ethan Simmon would continue to do damage from behind the arc, each knocking down a three to soon make it 22-19 with 11 minutes to play. The game would end up tied four more times over the next three minutes, before Shoshkikj drained back-to-back threes to give the Seawolves their biggest lead yet at 34-28.
  • Stony Brook maintained a six-point lead with just under two minutes remaining, with Pratt adding another four points breaking up Charleston's chance at a late run. With 40 seconds to go, Pratt would extend the lead to eight and reach 20 points on the day after knocking down two more from the stripe. A missed three-pointer from him with a second to go would end up turning into two more points for the Seawolves as Jonah Butler was right there to convert on the second chance layup and make it 46-37 at the half.
  • Three minutes into the second half and Stony Brook found itself with an 11-point lead following scores from Pratt and Brown as they made it 52-41. A three-minute scoring drought, however, subsequently led to the lead shrinking down to just three with 12 minutes to go.
  • Three-pointers from Prat and Simmon would help get the lead back to seven with under 10 to play as. the Seawolves reached 10 triples on the afternoon. Brown later kept it a seven-point lead with the team's 11th three-pointer at 7:54.
  • By 6:39, the Cougars finally managed to tie it for the first time since 8:22 in the first as the game was knotted up at 70-70. The Seawolves managed to go back up by four after another three from Simmon, before Butler made it 78-73 with a jumper at 3:26.
  • After the Cougars got back within three with under three to play, Goods came up with a massive dunk at 2:40 to regrow the lead to five.
  • Foul trouble allowed Charleston to come all the way back and briefly take an 81-80 lead with a minute remaining, only for a three from Butler to put the Seawolves right back on top 10 seconds later. Two more free throws from the Cougars would again tie it at 83-38 with just 27 seconds left to ultimately send it to overtime.
  • Butler started off overtime with a layup at 4:26, only for Charleston to respond with two from the line to keep it tied with under four to play. Both teams traded layups over the next minute as it stayed tied at 87-87.
  • With under two minutes to play, Charleston began to pull away, taking a 92-88 lead. At 0:34, Pratt managed to cut it back down to one as he sank his fourth three-pointer to put him at 32 points.
  • More sharp shooting at the charity stripe allowed the Cougars to go up by three, only for a triple from Goods to retie the game at 94-94 and send it to double overtime.
  • A quick layup from Pratt and two free throws from Butler soon gave Stony Brook a 98-94 lead in OT2. A 5-0 Cougars run was enough to retake the lead 99-98 with just over three to go, but a driving layup from Simmon took the lead right back and made it 100-99.
  • The lead would trade hands several more times, until yet another triple from Brown and two more free throws from Pratt suddenly made it a six point lead at 107-101 and under a minute to go. This cushion proved to be just enough as three more Stony Brook was able to hold on for the double overtime win.
