Stony Brook Falls Short in Conference Opener at Hampton

HAMPTON, Va. — Stony Brook women's basketball opened conference play with a loss at Hampton, 63-54, on Friday evening in Virginia. The Seawolves were led offensively by Johanna Potter's season-high 16 points.

Janay Brantley helped out with 13 points and eight rebounds and Sandra Frau Garcia chipped in with 10 points, four assists and three steals.

HOW IT HAPPENED
After falling behind 15-9, Stony Brook went on a 7-0 run with 1:32 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from Brantley at the buzzer, to take a 16-15 lead. Stony Brook capitalized on four Hampton turnovers in the period, turning them into four points on the other end of the floor.

Hampton rallied to take a 27-23 lead before Stony Brook went on a 5-0 run starting at the 3:08 mark in the second period, highlighted by a bucket from Potter, to take a 28-27 lead. The Pirates then came back to take a 32-30 lead heading into halftime.

Stony Brook's deficit grew after halftime, and the Seawolves faced a 50-42 disadvantage heading to the fourth quarter. Stony Brook played well inside, scoring six of its 12 points in the paint.

Stony Brook did not pull any closer in the fourth, losing by a final of 63-54. The Seawolves never overcame the two-point deficit they faced coming out of the locker room to start the second half.

STATS AND NOTES

  • Potter led the Seawolves with 16 points. Her seven field goals made also marked a season-best effort for the freshman from Georgia.
  • Stony Brook finished with a 41-37 rebounding advantage. The Seawolves cleaned up on the offensive glass, collecting 18 offensive boards.
  • Brantley chipped in with 13 and Frau Garcia added 10 to round out a trio of double-digit Seawolf scorers.
  • Stony Brook got a game-high nine rebounds from Caitlin Frost.
  • The Seawolves shot well from the charity stripe (15-18), but struggled from three-point range (3-18).
  • The contest featured 11 lead changes, all of which came during the opening 20 minutes of action.
