Berete Scores 24, Stony Brook Outlasts William & Mary In Overtime

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. — Stony Brook earned its first conference win of the season at William & Mary, defeating the Tribe 73-57 in overtime.

The Seawolves had three players score in double figures, led by Diaka Berete, who had 24 points and four steals. Brantley tacked on 18 points and eight rebounds and Caitlin Frost helped out with a double-double, recording 12 points and 13 rebounds.

HOW IT HAPPENED
After falling behind 9-3, Stony Brook went on a 10-0 run with 4:53 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from Frost, to take a 13-9 lead. The Seawolves entered the quarter break with a 15-14 advantage. Stony Brook relied on its three-point shooting in the period, knocking down three shots to account for nine of its 15 points.

William & Mary rallied to take a 30-20 lead before Stony Brook went on an 8-0 run with 2:36 mark remaining in the second period, highlighted by a three from Nal'La Bennett, to narrow its deficit to 30-28, a score that would hold until halftime.

William & Mary built a 37-34 advantage before Stony Brook went on a 5-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Brantley, to grab a 39-37 lead with 4:36 to go in the third. William & Mary responded to seize a 43-39 lead entering the fourth quarter.

William & Mary constructed a 47-41 advantage before Stony Brook went on a 9-0 run to grab hold of a 50-47 lead with 3:16 to go in the fourth. The Tribe fought back to even things up at 54-54 and send the contest to overtime.

Stony Brook grabbed a 63-56 lead with 2:23 left in the first overtime before going on a 10-0 run, finished off by Berete's three, to push the lead to 17 points, 73-56, with 28 seconds remaining. Stony Brook outscored William & Mary 19-3 in the extra period, earning a convincing win over the Tribe, who had won seven straight entering Sunday's contest.

STATS AND NOTES

  • Berete led the Seawolves with a season-high 24 points. She finished two points shy of matching her career-best effort, set as a member of the Jackson State program.
  • Frost notched a double-double for the Seawolves with 12 points and 13 rebounds.
  • The Seawolves rallied from a four-point 43-39 third quarter deficit to force the game into overtime. Over the final 15 minutes of play, Stony Brook outscored William & Mary 34-14.
  • Stony Brook found success from beyond the arc, knocking down 10 treys in the game.
  • Stony Brook had a 51-28 edge on the boards in the win. The Seawolves collected 18 offensive boards.
  • Sandra Frau Garcia grabbed 11 rebounds, a career-best mark.
  • The Seawolves tallied seven blocks as a team, the most in the McCorvey era. Stony Brook's seven rejections were the most as a team since notching eight on March 1, 2024.
  • Today's contest represented Stony Brook's first overtime game of the 2025-26 season and its first overtime victory since January 12, 2025 (Charleston).
