Seawolves Down Elon for Fifth Win in a Row

ELON, N.C. - The Seawolves closed out January with one last victory as they bested Elon 72-68 for their fifth straight win, marking the first time in program history th\at they have won five CAA games in a row.

How It Happened

  • Rob Brown III knocked down his first triple to give the Seawolves an early 5-3 lead at 18:00 and the team never looked back for the rest of the half. Andrej Shoshkikj would quickly tack on seven points, while Brown drained another three at 14:30 to double up Elon at 14-7.
  • For the next few minutes the lead would only grow as Richard Goods, coming off the bench today, threw down a massive dunk followed by a driving layup from Shohskikj to make it 21-12 with just under 12 minutes remaining. Though the Phoenix managed to pull within two with nine minutes to go, three-pointers from Ethan Simmon, Tomas Valentiny, and Brown soon regrew the lead to 10 by the five-minute mark.
  • The lead soon extended to 15 after a hook shot from Quin Gorman which was immediately followed by the fourth triple from Brown to make it 45-30 with four to go. The defense held Elon to just six points over the waning minutes of the half as the Seawolves took a 48-36 lead into the locker room.
  • Simmon and Shoshkikj continued to rain down the threes in the opening minutes of the half to keep it a 12-point edge after five.
  • The next five minutes were quiet for both teams as they combined for just nine points, giving Stony Brook a 57-48 lead halfway through the period. Over the next three minutes however, the Phoenix went on an 10-0 run to take their first lead since the opening minute of the game.
  • Elon's lead proved to be short lived as Valentiny made his second triple of the day to retake the lead. Three more from the charity stripe would get it back to a five-point game with five and a half to go.
  • Three minutes later, the Phoenix once again came back and retook the lead at 66-65. With less than two minutes on the clock, Brown caught the inbound and made another one from deep to give the lead back to Stony Brook, only for Elon to immediately respond and knot it up 68-68 with 1:30 remaining.
  • With 40 seconds left, a cylinder foul allowed Gorman to head to the line and knock down both free throws to make it 70-68. Two more Phoenix fouls would allow Erik Pratt to go to the line twice and extend the lead to four, paving the way for the win.

Stats and Notes

  • Shoshkikj had his 10th double-digit scoring game as he paced the Seawolves with 17 points. He was also tied for the team lead in rebounds with a season-high eight along with Pratt.
