Seawolves Win Streak Comes to an End Against Monmouth

STONY BROOK, N.Y. - The Seawolves came just one point short of erasing a 15-point deficit against Monmouth on Thursday as they dropped their first game in nearly a month 76-75 to snap their five-game winning streak.

How It Happened

  • Both teams started off slow offensively, notching just two points apiece through the first four minutes of the night. Seven minutes in and the scoring began to pick up, as Erik Pratt accounted for all seven of the Seawolves' points as they trailed 14-7. Ethan Simmon would be the first Seawolf to score besides Pratt, draining a three at 12:06 to cut the deficit down to six.
  • The Hawks went on a 10-0 run over the next three minutes to take a 26-10 lead. Pratt broke the run with a pair of layups, before he and Simmon each knocked down another triple to remain Stony Brook's only scorers. Despite this, though, the Seawolves still trailed by double digits at 32-20 with six minutes to play.
  • Jonah Butler joined in on the scoring with two from the line at 5:50 to make it a 10-point game. Simmon immediately followed up with his third three-pointer to make it 32-25.
  • Stony Brook's momentum soon ran out, however, as a 9-0 Monmouth run regrew the deficit to 16 by the three-minute mark. Four points from Richard Goods and Tomas Valentiny were all the Seawolves would get in the remainder of the frame as they ended the half down 46-31.
  • Andrej Shoshkikj got on the board with a three to open the half, before eight-straight free throws from Pratt, Valentiny, and Rob Brown III would get it back down to a six-point game after five minutes.
  • 10 minutes in and Monmouth extended its lead to 13 after going on an 11-1 run. Momentum soon swung back in Stony Brook's favor, though, with Butler and Brown both making threes to help get the Seawolves back within five at 63-58. With seven minutes to go, Pratt made it a three-point game after snagging an offensive board and cashing it in.
  • The Seawolves kept within seven of the Hawks over the next few minutes, before again pulling within three at 2:09 off Shoshkikj's third triple.
  • Down to a minute left and it remained a three-point game at 73-70. Over the final 30 seconds, the Seawolves twice got within one, but ultimately that would be as close as they would get as they fell just a single point short of the comeback.

Stats and Notes

  • Pratt bounced back with his 11th game of the season with over 20 points as he finished the night with a team-high 22.
  • Shoshkikj had his 11th double-digit scoring game of the season with 18 point.
  • Simmon reached double figures for the sixth time with 10 points after going 3-for-4 from deep.
  • Goods topped 10 rebounds for the fourth time this season to lead the team. Pratt and Shoshkikj were right behind him with eight and seven, respectively.
  • The Seawolves finished with 11 triples, marking their 11th game this year with double-digit three-pointers.
