STONY BROOK, N.Y. — Stony Brook women's soccer picked up a 1-0 victory over William & Mary on a rainy Sunday afternoon at Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium.
Lisa Muller netted the game-winning goal, her second in as many contests this week.
Both sides tried finding their footing in the early going on a wet afternoon on Long Island. In a battle of the midfield, William & Mary generated a few offensive chances while keeping the Seawolves' attack in check through the opening 20-plus minutes of action. The Tribe's first chance at goal in the opening moments was turned aside by Jona Hennings, who sprawled out and guided a grounded shot away and out of bounds for a corner kick.
Stony Brook settled in offensively and began to generate some offense. Shots from Camryn Goodman and Juni Einarsson tested the Tribe keeper, who was up to the task on successive shots from Stony Brook attackers. Despite chances for both sides in the closing moments, the match entered the intermission scoreless.
William & Mary nearly netted the opening goal, getting one past Hennings that pinged the post and then was cleared away from danger. Minutes later, it was Hedvig Helling that got free and made a move to set up a shot on goal that was handled by the goalkeeper to keep the match level at zero.
Finally, Stony Brook broke through in the 73rd minute of the contest. Muller used her hip to redirect a bouncing pass from a set piece at the corner that then hit off of a Tribe defender and into the back of the net. The unorthodox goal counted all the same and served as the deciding goal, courtesy of Muller for the second time this week.
Stony Brook returns to action next Sunday, October 18 at Drexel. The Seawolves travel to face the Dragons, led by Shannon Grogan '15, a women's soccer alumnae and long-time assistant coach under head coach Tobias Bischof. The match is scheduled for a 3 pm start in Philadelphia, streaming live on FloCollege.
