Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Stony Brook Returns to Win Column With Shutout Victory Over Hampton

STONY BROOK, N.Y. — Stony Brook women's soccer returned home and returned to the win column with a 1-0 victory over Hampton on Thursday evening at LaValle Stadium. Lisa Muller netted a penalty kick goal, representing the deciding goal in Stony Brook's fifth clean sheet of the season.

Stony Brook's offense applied pressure from the get-go, generating chances throughout the entirety of the first half. Leah Rifas opened things with a tough-angle shot that was saved, Juni Einarsson followed with a low-driven shot that was smothered by the Hampton keeper and a long-range effort from Eva Sprewell sailed just wide. Later on it was leading goal scorer Emily Lemke that put a shot towards goal that was corralled. Despite all the attempts, Stony Brook had nothing to show for it through the opening half hour of action at LaValle Stadium.

Hampton put forth its first shot attempt at the 32-minute mark of the first half, a simple save for Jona Hennings. The Pirates' best opportunity came after a Stony Brook miscue in the defensive third that led to a Hampton corner kick. The set piece was headed away and promptly cleared by the Stony Brook defense to quickly defuse the threat.

With less than three minutes remaining in the first half, Maya Corbett was taken down inside the box and earned a penalty kick. Lisa Muller stepped up to take the penalty kick, burying a shot into the lower left corner of the net to put the Seawolves ahead late in the first half. The goal was the first of Muller's collegiate career.

Stony Brook continued the offensive pressure into the second half, but Hampton held strong defensively to keep the Seawolves from adding to their lead. The Pirates turned in a stronger second half on the offensive end as well, generating a multitude of chances, including four corner kicks. Hampton forced Stony Brook's backline to play perfectly, making the team earn what eventually became its fifth clean sheet of the season.

Stony Brook returns to action on Sunday, hosting William & Mary for a 1 pm start at LaValle Stadium. The match will stream live on SNY and FloCollege.
