STONY BROOK, N.Y. - A 16-2 run in the final 3:56 of play catapulted Stony Brook women's basketball into the win column, as it took down Monmouth 61-51 at Stony Brook Arena on Sunday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED
In the opening quarter of play, both the Seawolves and Hawks traded buckets back and forth, as Chloe Oliver hit a layup in the final seconds, evening things up at 13-13 heading into the second.Â
After Monmouth took a 17-15 lead early in the second quarter, Stony Brook responded by going on a 9-0 run, highlighted by a bucket from Alex Brown, to take a 24-17 lead with 3:26 remaining.
Monmouth closed out the quarter, scoring five of the final seven points as the Seawolves took a 26-22 advantage into halftime.
The Hawks continued to fight back in the third, drawing things even at 29-29 with 6:27 left to play in the quarter. Stony Brook quickly answered with a 6-0 run to take a 35-29 lead. Yet again, Monmouth immediately answered, closing out the third on an 11-6 run as the Seawolves took a 41-40 lead into the final quarter of play.
Stony Brook's one-point lead was short-lived as the Hawks poured on a quick five points to open the scoring in the fourth and take a 45-41 lead with 8:56 left to play. The Seawolves battled back to even things up at 45-45, a little over two minutes. The Hawks then scored the next two buckets to take a 49-45 lead with 5:20 left to go.
After fighting back to even things on two separate occasions, Stony Brook retook the lead with 1:22 remaining courtesy of a three by Caitlin Frost. She then drilled another make from deep, less than 30 seconds later, as the Seawolves closed things out on a 16-2 run to secure the 61-51 victory over the Hawks. Â
STATS AND NOTES
- Janay Brantley led all scorers with 16 in the contest. She scored eight of her points from the charity stripe, going a perfect 8-of-8 from the line.
- Frost tacked on 14 points and six rebounds.
- Diaka Berete posted a solid all-around performance with 10 points, eight rebounds, and three steals.
- The Seawolves held the Hawks to only 35.7 percent shooting from the field, and 15% from deep as Monmouth shot just 3-for-20 from three-point land.
- Stony Brook's bench outscored Monmouth's bench 25-8.
- Defensively, the Seawolves forced 16 turnovers, scoring 23 points off of them.
- Stony Brook now leads the all-time series against the Hawks 6-5, and is 4-2 all-time against them at home.
