BOSTON, Mass. - Stony Brook women's basketball was defeated by Northeastern 73-60 on Sunday afternoon in Boston. The Seawolves had two players score in double figures, led by
Janay Brantley with 26 points. and
Diaka Berete, who scored 19.
HOW IT HAPPENED
After falling behind 9-5, Stony Brook went on a 5-0 run with 5:29 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from Berete, to take a 10-9 lead. The Seawolves then surrendered that lead and entered the second quarter down 18-13.
Stony Brook kept the Huskies from increasing their lead before going on a 6-0 run, highlighted by a bucket from Johanna Potter, to take a 25-24 lead. The Huskies then came roaring back with an 11-1 run in the final 2:29 of the quarter, giving them a 35-26 lead at the half.
Northeastern continued to extend its lead after halftime, holding a 39-26 advantage before Stony Brook went on a 5-0 run, capped by a three-pointer from Berete, narrowing the gap to 39-31 with 6:48 left in the third quarter. Northeastern responded by increasing its lead to 56-44 heading into the fourth quarter.
Stony Brook continued to battle in the fourth but was unable to overcome its deficit falling to the Huskies by a final score of 73-60.
STATS AND NOTES
- Brantley scored a game-high 26 points. Her scoring output of 26 sets a new career high for the junior guard.
- Berete tallied 19 points in the loss and made five three-pointers for a second straight game.
- Stony Brook lost despite a 32-22 rebounding advantage.Â
- The Seawolf defense forced 18 turnovers.
- Stony Brook cleaned up on the offensive glass, collecting 20 offensive boards in the game.
