STONY BROOK, N.Y. - Stony Brook women's lacrosse opened its 2026 season on Sunday afternoon, cruising to a 15-6 victory over UAlbany at LaValle Stadium.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Stony Brook started fast, as
Isabella Caporuscio converted on a free-position attempt, giving the Seawolves a 1-0 lead less than two minutes into action on Sunday afternoon.
Haydin Eisfeld and
Reese Hjertaas each tacked on a goal in the quarter, with UAlbany adding one as well, seeing Stony Brook lead 3-1 going into the second stanza.
The two sides traded goals in the opening minutes of the second quarter. After that, the Seawolves went on a 3-0 run to close out the first half, thanks to goals from Hjertaas,
Keira Martin and
Olivia Schorr, giving them a 7-2 advantage at the half.
Stony Brook opened the scoring in the third courtesy of a goal from Hjertaas, making it 8-2 in favor of the Seawolves with 13:01 left to go in the third frame. Exactly a minute later, the Great Danes scored, followed by another goal shortly after, to cut the Stony Brook lead in half, 8-4. The Seawolves responded later in the quarter with back-to-back goals from Hjertaas, giving them a 10-4 lead heading into the final quarter of play.
The Seawolves shut the door in the fourth, scoring the first four goals of the quarter as Martin,
Julia Fusco and Schorr found the back of the net to get the clock running and give Stony Brook a 14-4 lead. In the closing minutes, UAlbany scored twice and the Seawolves once. Stony Brook picked up its 20th consecutive win over UAlbany.
STATS AND NOTES
- In her first game as a Seawolf, Hjertaas paced the Stony Brook offense with a game-high five goals.
- Fellow Limestone transfer Keira Martin tallied five points on three goals and two assists in the win.
- Schorr scored three goals, notching the first hat trick of her collegiate career.
- With a goal in the second quarter, Mirabella Altebrando recorded her first collegiate goal.
- Caporuscio, Eisfeld and Fusco all tallied a goal apiece.
- Ava Yancey started in net for Stony Brook, making six stops and earning the second win of her collegiate career.
- The Seawolves scooped up 15 ground balls to UAlbany's 12.
- Stony Brook has now won its season opener four years straight.
- With today's win over UAlbany, the Seawolves improve to 25-7 all-time against the Great Danes and have won now 20 straight over their former America East foe.
